{"id":584412,"date":"2024-04-17T04:52:50","date_gmt":"2024-04-17T11:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=584412"},"modified":"2024-04-17T09:51:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T16:51:15","slug":"australian-championships-day-1-mens-400m-freestyle-elijah-winnington-turns-it-on-to-win-the-battle-of-the-world-champions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/australian-championships-day-1-mens-400m-freestyle-elijah-winnington-turns-it-on-to-win-the-battle-of-the-world-champions\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Championships Day 1, Men\u2019s 400m Freestyle: Elijah Winnington Turns It On To Win The Battle of the World Champions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Australian Championships Day 1, Men\u2019s 400m Freestyle: Elijah Winnington Turns It On To Win The Battle of the World Champions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Elijah Winnington<\/strong> (St Peters Western, QLD) saved his best till last to win the battle of the 400m freestyle world champions in one of the races of the night on day one of the four-day Australian Championship meet on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2002 world champion winner from Budapest powered off the final turn like a \u201csuper sub\u201d to catch 2023 world champion <strong>Sam Short<\/strong> (Rackley Swim Team) \u2013 clocking 3:41.41 to Short\u2019s 3:41.64 with 2024 winner from Doha, Korea\u2019s <strong>Woomin Kim<\/strong> third in 3:45.12.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Winnington and Short\u2019s times bettered Kim\u2019s winning time of 3:42.71 \u2013 swum when he beat Winnington and German\u2019s Lukas Martens in February this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim led narrowly through the first 100m in \u00a054.40, from Winnington 53.43 and Short 53.63 before Short hit the front at the 200m, in 1:49.44 \u2013 before powering down the fifth lap \u2013 and leading comfortably by almost a full second at the 300m mark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Winnington\u2019s turns, especially the final turn, were the difference in the end and Winnington split 26.76 to Short\u2019s 27.56 down the final lap to out-touch a dogged Short in a thrilling finish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u00a0newly engaged Winnington said he \u00a0couldn\u2019t be happier with \u201chis second ever best time\u201d and at this stage of his preparation for Paris \u2013 two months out from the Australian Trials in June and 100 days from the start of the Games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSam and I have some great battles but to have Woomin here makes it world class\u2026it could not be better\u201d said Winnington, who gave his fiancee Eve a shout on the television interview with two-time Olympian <strong>Meagen Nay.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other highlights:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympic and World 100m freestyle champion <strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong>\u00a0(St Andrews, QLD, Coach <strong>Ashley Delaney<\/strong>) in 23.10, upset noted butterflyers <strong>Cam McEvoy<\/strong>\u00a0(Somerville House, QLD; coach <strong>Tim Lane<\/strong>) 23.35 and <strong>Isaac Cooper<\/strong> (St Andrews, QLD, Coach <strong>Ashley Delaney<\/strong>) 23.52 in the 50m butterfly final.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympic 200m breaststroke champion <strong>Zac Stubblety-Cook<\/strong>\u00a0(Chandler, QLD, Coach Vince Raleigh) 59.85 produced his trade-mark back end to win the men\u2019 100m breaststroke \u2013 fresh from an altitude camp in Flagstaff, Arizona. WA\u2019s <strong>Joshua Yong<\/strong>, (UWA West Coast, WA, Coach <strong>Ben Higson<\/strong>) 1:00.16 finished second ahead of Japan\u2019s <strong>Ippei Watanabe<\/strong> 1:00.42.<\/p>\n<p>The 200m backstroke saw Korea&#8217;s<strong>Juho Lee<\/strong> (1:56.97) hold on to beat local boy <strong>Bradley Woodward<\/strong> (Mingara, NSW, Coach <strong>Adam Kable<\/strong>) 1:57.67 with <strong>Josh Edwards Smith<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD, Coach <strong>Michael Bohl<\/strong>) third in 1:59.08.<\/p>\n<p>Paralympic gold medallist <strong>Benjamin Hanc<\/strong>e (St Andrews, QLD) nudged the world record in the 50m butterfly clocking 24.65; world record holder <strong>Timothy Hodge<\/strong> (ACU Blacktown, Coach <strong>Misha Payne<\/strong>) was impressive in winning the 400m freestyle in 4:15.36 and<strong> Jack Ireland<\/strong> (Uni of QLD; Coach<strong> David Heyden<\/strong>) won the 200m freestyle in 1:53.86 \u00a0in some impressive swims from an Australian para
