{"id":584064,"date":"2024-04-12T09:45:03","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T16:45:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=584064"},"modified":"2024-04-12T09:45:03","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T16:45:03","slug":"gertrude-ederle-biopic-young-woman-and-the-sea-set-for-may-release-trailer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gertrude-ederle-biopic-young-woman-and-the-sea-set-for-may-release-trailer\/","title":{"rendered":"Gertrude Ederle Biopic \u2018Young Woman and the Sea\u2019 Set for May Release (Trailer)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gertrude Ederle Biopic \u2018Young Woman and the Sea\u2019 Set for May Release (Trailer)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Young Woman and the Sea<\/em>, a <strong>Gertrude Ederle<\/strong> biopic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/what-gertrude-ederle-can-teach-us-about-grit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the first woman to swim the English Channel<\/a>, is set for a May release date, with the trailer revealed this week.<\/p>\n<p>It will star <strong>Daisy Ridley<\/strong> and be given a theatrical release by Disney.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7tNvrYzPUrk?si=_wxwCArh-Y29m5mk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt5177114\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The film<\/a> is based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Young-Woman-Sea-Conquered-Inspired\/dp\/0618858687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 2009 book of the same name<\/a> written by <strong>Glenn Stout.<\/strong> It\u2019s gone through a long development process that started nearly a decade ago, eventually finding its way to Disney and, reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/video\/young-woman-and-the-sea-trailer-daisy-ridley-cinemacon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thanks to positive reviews in screenings<\/a>, to a limited theatrical rather than merely streaming release.<\/p>\n<p>The movie also features <strong>Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston<\/strong> and <strong>Glenn Fleshler.<\/strong> It\u2019s written by <strong>Jeff Nathanson<\/strong> and directed by <strong>Joachim Ronning,<\/strong> with <strong>Jerry Bruckheimer<\/strong> as a producer.<\/p>\n<p>Ederle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gertrude-ederle-first-woman-to-swim-the-english-channel-dies-at-98\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who died in 2003<\/a> at age 98, was born in New York as the daughter of a German-born butcher. She swam at the groundbreaking Women\u2019s Swimming Association in New York and won three medals at the 1924 Paris Olympics, with bronze in the 100 free and 400 free and gold in the 400 free relay. She attempted a crossing of the English Channel in 1925, when WSA teammate and fellow Olympian <strong>Helen Wainwright<\/strong> was injured, and successfully became the first woman to cross the channel in 1926. She was just the sixth person to swim the channel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/when-she-beat-the-boys-celebrating-gertrude-ederles-historic-english-channel-crossing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her record time<\/a> holding until 1950.<\/p>\n<p>This is the latest in swimming cinema, following on the heels of the lauded <em>Nyad<\/em>, which told the story of open water swimmer <strong>Diana Nyad,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81447231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2023<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-swimmers-film-on-mardini-sisters-to-get-september-festival-debut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Netflix film<\/a>, The
