ATLANTIC CITY, NJ, September 6. DAN DeMarco, 23, a member of the US World Championships team, won the second annual Atlantic City Swim Marathon 10K today by a margin of almost seven minutes. Forty-five swimmers competed in the race and all finished.<\/p>\n
The women's winner was 16 year-old Casey Wagner, of Pittsburgh, who won by almost precisely the same margin.<\/p>\n
De Marco, a former University of Virginia swimmer from Great Neck, N.Y. finished in a course record 2 hours, 1 minute, 45 seconds — six minutes 51 seconds ahead of Germany's Jan Sibberson.<\/p>\n
"I went out hard and tried to hold on and maintain the lead," DeMarco, a member of the Long Island Aquatic Club, said. <\/p>\n
Wagner finished in 2:10:45, third overall and six minutes 48 seconds in front of 2000 US Olympian Maddie Crippen. The two women battled for the first 6,000 meters before Crippen began falling steadily behind.<\/p>\n
At 13, Joanna Thomas was the youngest swimmer in the race and finished fifth for the women and 11th overall. Her time was 2:22:03. Brenda Borgh Bartlett, a 1976 Olympian and the recent winner of the women's title at the Atlantic City Pageant Open Swim, finished 14th overall and sixth among the women. <\/p>\n
