Lewis Clareburt, Erika Fairweather Near Record Speed in 200 Free National Championship Wins<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lewis Clareburt<\/strong> and Erika Fairweather<\/strong> were each close to knocking off records in the 200 freestyle on Day 2 of the New Zealand Swimming Championships Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Clareburt went 1:47.18 to win the men\u2019s event to win by nearly two seconds. He nearly took down Matthew Stanley\u2019s<\/strong> national record of 1:47.09 from 2014. The time is short, however, of the Olympic A cut of 1:46.26.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really happy to do a personal best,\u201d Clareburt told Swimming NZ<\/a> of the first event in his program. \u201cIf I can do these ones right then my main events are going to be nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zac Reid<\/strong> was second in 1:48.90, with Matthew Hutchins<\/strong> third.<\/p>\n

World Champion Fairweather went 1:55.49 to dominate the women\u2019s 200 free. That\u2019s just .05 off her national record. Fairweather, 20, won silver in this event at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships and gold in the 400 free.<\/p>\n

Second was Laticia-Leigh Transom<\/strong> in 1:58.42, followed by Caitlin Deans<\/strong> in 2:00.72 and Chelsey Edwards<\/strong> in 2:01.00. New Zealand\u2019s only qualified relay for the Paris Olympics is the women\u2019s 800 free.<\/p>\n
