Cutino Award &#8211; Heisman Equivalent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a typical year, it would be obvious who the top contenders are for the best female collegiate water polo player in America. The criterion is usually: Are they on a top four (or five) team in the CWPA rankings? Is their team a legitimate contender for an NCAA title?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do they play for Stanford?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I made that last one up; it\u2019s just that almost half of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_J._Cutino_Award\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all Cutino awardees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for women (10) have played on The Farm, including the last three: sisters <\/span><b>Aria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Mackenzie Fishe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r (twice), both of whom led their Cardinal teammates to NCAA titles. Aria won hers solo last year; Makenzie\u2014with help from her sister (and many others!) won in 2022. Oh, and Stanford also won with both in 2019 as Makenzie copped the Cutino that year, her first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, in any normal year, the Cutino winner is the best player on the team that wins the national championship. Well, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/goalies-rule-princetons-johnson-uscs-baron-win-cutino-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is NOT a normal year. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-womens-water-polo-preview-olympic-year-may-have-impact-on-season-ahead\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an Olympic year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so the best collegiate players\u2014both American and foreign\u2014are training with their national teams, hoping to get a spot in the Paris Games this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this there\u2019s no clear favorite for 2024. The Olympic Club, which annually presents the award to the best male and female collegiate player, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usawaterpolo.org\/news\/2024\/3\/14\/general-2024-cutino-award-watch-list-announced-highlighting-22-womens-water-polo-athletes.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently put out a watchlist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 22 candidates selected by NCAA <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">head coaches. The coaches pick six athletes\u2014with a cap of three from their own school. Usually it\u2019s 20 athletes but this year there was a tie so the list grew to 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case you\u2019re wondering (I did!), the watch list and the final nominees are two separate things. So none of this may make sense by the time the awards banquet is held on June 1 in San Francisco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s great about this list is that schools like Brown, Salem, Mount St. Mary\u2019s, Wagner and others had athletes nominated. They do not usually get votes for best player, but why not? What\u2019s puzzling is that no one from Loyola Marymount, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lmulions.com\/news\/2024\/4\/6\/womens-water-polo-lions-move-to-5-0-in-conference-for-best-start-since-joining-gcc-in-2014.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nation\u2019s hottest program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outside of UCLA, made the cut. Yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All athletes are arranged alphabetically. Statistics are through April 7, 2024.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>TOP FIVE CONTENDERS:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Alba Bonamusa Boix<\/b><b>; Hawai\u2019i (Senior; Attacker)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boix is arguably the best player for one of the country\u2019s best programs. She leads the Rainbow Wahine with 72 points (40 goals, 32 assists) and 14 field blocks. If Hawai\u2019i makes it to the NCAA final, there\u2019s a Cutino case to be made for Boix or one of the other two Wahine on this list. It should be noted that in the award\u2019s quarter century existence, only two men\u2014Pacific\u2019s<\/span> <b>Balazs Erdelyi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (twice) and UC-Irvine\u2019s <\/span><b>Tim Hutten<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014from non-Pac 12 schools have won a Cutino. Photo Courtesy: Hawai&#8217;i Athletics<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Lara Luka<\/b><b>, Long Beach State (Senior; Utility)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka leads LBS and the Big West conference with 77 goals and 45 assists. She\u2019s scored in 25 of 26 games this season, including 22 straight. Her defense is also good; she\u2019s second on the team in steals. As Luka goes so goes The Beach. And she goes hard all the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Anna Pearson<\/b><b>, UCLA (Sophomore; Utility)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 34 goals and 71 earned exclusions. Pearson is an integral player on the nation\u2019s top team. Now, she\u2019s not the only reason the Bruins are favorites for an NCAA title but if they do win, someone\u2019s gonna be recognized, so Pearson could be it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Luca Petovary<\/b><b>; Arizona State (Senior; Attacker)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to stats, nobody in the MPSF is better than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petovary. She\u2019s put up huge numbers this season\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">117 goals, 28 assists, 31 exclusions drawn, 12 field blocks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014part of why the Sun Devils are already 11 wins better than last year. But she\u2019s leading a team that has no chance at a title and will likely finish fifth or sixth in her conference. Still, she will end up the top scorer in the best conference in the sport; that counts for something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Isabel Williams<\/b><b>; California (Senior; Goalkeeper)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 210 saves, a .700 save percentage and 24 steals this season, barring injury Williams will break Cal\u2019s all-time saves record for women. If the Golden Bears make the final this year, Williams will likely be the critical difference\u2014and become the fifth female goalie to win a Cutino. Williams\u2019 biggest challenge may be UCLA and freshman goalie <\/span><b>Lauren Steele<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not nominated but integral to the Bruins\u2019 success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>THE NEXT FIVE WATER POLO CANDIDATES:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Bia Mantellato Dias<\/b><b>; Hawai\u2019i (Sophomore; Center)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Hawai;i wins a national championship, Dias, who has a wicked shot, will be a big contributor. With 55 goals and 6 assists, she is the Wahine\u2019s leading goal scorer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Panni Szegedi<\/b><b>; UCLA (Freshman; Utility)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A freshman, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Szegedi is second on the Bruins with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 goals and is often at the center of attention on both sides of the ball (with UCLA Head Coach Adam Wright exhorting her to get in position on defense). Blazing fast and from Hungary, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Szegedi may be the X-factor for Wright\u2019s squad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Madison Walker<\/b><b>; UC-Santa Barbara (Sophomore; Goalkeeper)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker\u2014196 saves, .534 save percentage, 8.11 goals-against average, 37 steals in 26 appearances\u2014has anchored a stout Gaucho defense that\u2019s second best in the Big West, including 18 matches holding opponents to single-digits in goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sophie Wallace<\/b><b>; Stanford University (Graduate; 2M Defender)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember what I said about Stanford having a recent monopoly on the award? Wallace leads the Cardinal in many offensive and defensive stats: 43 goals, 26 assists, 20 exclusions drawn, 20 steals, 6 field blocks. If Stanford wins a third-straight NCAA title, Wallace will get a lot of attention for her efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kayla Yelensky<\/b><b>; Princeton University (Junior; Utility)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petovary for ASU, Yalensky\u2014with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">56 goals, 19 assists, 27 steals, 35 exclusions drawn, 9 field blocks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014is a stat stuffer for the Tigers. The difference: Princeton is likely to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make it to NCAAs. If the Tigers make another run to the Final Four, like they did last year, Yelensky will be the focal point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ALL THE REST:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Dora Alaksza<\/b><b>; Pacific (Sophomore; Attacker)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alaksza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014with 77 goals, 12 assists, 32 steals\u2014has the best stats of anyone in the Golden Coast Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Libby Alsemgeest<\/b><b>; Michigan (Senior; Center)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of two Wolverines nominated. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32 goals, 106 exclusions drawn and 17 steals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the #2 team in CWPA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hailey Andress<\/b><b>; Fresno State (Sophomore; Attacker)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fresno State is looking at a fourth-straight GCC title; Andress\u201459 goals, 14 assists, 37 steals\u2014will be key if they get there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Andrea Arias<\/b><b>; Wagner College (Senior; Center)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Seahawks\u2014<\/span><b>Carlota Alonso <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(95 goals, 29 assists, 50 steals)\u2014have better stats than Arias, with 73 goals, 27 assists, 7 field blocks. But 71 exclusions drawn underscores her value to the MAAC\u2019s best team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maya Avital<\/b><b>; Stanford (Senior; Goalkeeper)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avital has 136 saves in 15 starts sharing time with Christine Carpenter and Jackie King<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Elle Fredrickson<\/b><b>; Santa Clara University (Senior; Center)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fredrickson<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads the Broncos with 34 goals and 39 exclusions drawn and is a bright spot a team on track for 20 losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Lucia Gomez de la Puente<\/b><b>; Hawai\u2019i (Senior; Attacker)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38 goals, 34 assists and 8 field blocks for the #2 scorer on the nation\u2019s #2 team<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Taeghen Hack<\/b><b>; Salem University (Senior; Attacker\/Utility)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hack is having an outstanding season for the Tigers\u201450 goals, 37 assists. Salem went to NCAAs two years ago when Hack was a sophomore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ana Luisa Miguel Gomes Cotta<\/b><b>; Mount St. Mary&#8217;s University (Senior; Attacker)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mount has qualified for a second consecutive MAAC playoff; Cotta, who leads MSM with 61 goals, 35 assists and 28 steals, has been key to that success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Madeleine Poissonnier<\/b><b>; Brown University (Sophomore; Defender)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poissonnier<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has 20 goals, 11 assists and 17 steals for a Bear squad that\u2019s fighting for third in the CWPA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kata Utassy<\/b><b>; Michigan (Senior; Attacker)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top scorer on the Wolverines with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 goals, 32 assists, 24 steals, 7 blocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Claudia Valdes<\/b><b>; San Diego State (Sophomore; Attacker)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valdes has 59 goals, 29 steals and 14 field blocks, all tops on the Aztecs water polo, as well as 24 assists.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a typical year, it would be obvious who the top contenders are for the best female collegiate water polo player in America.
