{"id":583490,"date":"2024-04-04T12:44:08","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T19:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=583490"},"modified":"2024-04-04T12:44:08","modified_gmt":"2024-04-04T19:44:08","slug":"leon-marchand-earns-third-straight-pac-12-swimmer-of-the-year-nod","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/leon-marchand-earns-third-straight-pac-12-swimmer-of-the-year-nod\/","title":{"rendered":"Leon Marchand Earns Third Straight Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year Nod"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Leon Marchand Earns Third Straight Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year Nod<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arizona State star <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> was named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year for the third straight year, the conference <a href=\"https:\/\/pac-12.com\/article\/2024\/04\/03\/pac-12-announces-2024-mens-swimming-diving-postseason-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed Thursday in its postseason men\u2019s swimming awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The NCAA champion Sun Devils made a clean sweep on the swimming side of things, with Canadian international <strong>Ilya Kharun<\/strong> as the freshman of the year and (now former) head coach <strong>Bob Bowman<\/strong> the Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford had the diver and the diving coach of the year in <strong>Jack Ryan<\/strong> and <strong>Patrick Jeffrey.<\/strong> Arizona\u2019s <strong>Gage DuBois<\/strong> was the top freshman diver.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Men\u2019s Swimmer of the Year<\/strong>: Leon Marchand, Arizona State<\/li>\n<li><strong>Men\u2019s Freshman Swimmer of the Year<\/strong>: Ilya Kharun, Arizona State<\/li>\n<li><strong>Men\u2019s Swimming Coach of the Year<\/strong>: Bob Bowman, Arizona State<\/li>\n<li><strong>Men\u2019s Diver of the Year<\/strong>: Jack Ryan, Stanford<\/li>\n<li><strong>Men\u2019s Freshman Diver of the Year<\/strong>: Gage Dubois, Arizona<\/li>\n<li><strong>Men\u2019s Diving Coach of the Year<\/strong>: Patrick Jeffrey, Stanford<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Marchand won the award for the third straight year, the irrepressible Frenchman coming off another record-breaking NCAAs. He won all three of his individual events \u2013 the 500 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley \u2013 and led Arizona State to wins in the 400 medley and 400 free relays.<\/p>\n<p>Marchand re-set records <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mens-ncaa-championships-leon-marchand-blasts-ncaa-record-402-31-in-500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the 500 free<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-mens-championships-leon-marchand-does-it-again-breaks-record-in-200-breaststroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 200 breast<\/a> at NCAAs and briefly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mens-ncaa-championships-luke-hobson-downs-american-record-leon-marchand-takes-ncaa-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">held the 200 free NCAA record<\/a>. The relay wins were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-mens-championships-leon-marchand-splits-48-73-to-lead-arizona-state-to-first-ever-national-relay-win-ncaa-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the first in program history<\/a> for the Sun Devils, as was the team title.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/pac-12-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pac-12 Swimming News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kharun capped a stellar freshman season <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-mens-championships-ilya-kharun-edges-dare-rose-in-epic-200-butterfly-finish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by winning the 200 butterfly at NCAAs<\/a>. He was part of the Sun Devils\u2019 200 medley relay NCAA record at Pac-12s. He was on the winning 400 medley relay that was ASU\u2019s first. Kharun also finished 12th in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 fly. He was on relays that finished third in the 200 free and second in the 200 medley.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman led Arizona State to a 9-0-1 record. After last year\u2019s runner-up finish at NCAAs, they leapt to a first national title this year. They also won a Pac-12 title with the second-highest winner margin in conference history. He\u2019s the first coach not named <strong>Dave Durden<\/strong> to win the award since 2017. Bowman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bob-bowman-named-director-of-swimming-head-mens-coach-at-university-of-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was hired on Monday<\/a> to be the new head coach at the University of Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan scored on both springboards at NCAAs, the junior and American national teamer finishing fourth on 1-meter and third on 3-meter. He had swept both springboard events at Pac-12s, including with the top 1-meter score in the country of the regular season. Ryan had been the Freshman Diver of the Year in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a path that Dubois is looking to follow. The Arizona freshman, who medically redshirted last year, finished second on platform at Pac-12s, third on 1-meter and fifth on 3-meter.
