{"id":583325,"date":"2024-04-02T14:44:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T21:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=583325"},"modified":"2024-04-02T14:44:00","modified_gmt":"2024-04-02T21:44:00","slug":"tim-murphy-wont-return-as-head-coach-at-penn-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tim-murphy-wont-return-as-head-coach-at-penn-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Tim Murphy Won\u2019t Return as Head Coach at Penn State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Tim Murphy Won\u2019t Return as Head Coach at Penn State<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Penn State announced on Tuesday that it will not renew the contract of men\u2019s and women\u2019s head coach <strong>Tim Murphy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Murphy was hired in 2013-14 and had spent 11 years at the helm in Happy Valley.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We would like to thank Tim for his service to Penn State for the last 11 years and wish him all the best in the future,&#8221; said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. <strong>Patrick Kraft<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/gopsusports.com\/news\/2024\/4\/2\/swimming-diving-murphys-contract-not-renewed.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a brief university statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/big-ten-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Ten Swimming News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Nittany Lions qualified two men and three relays to NCAAs this year, scoring eight points for 34th. The women were represented at NCAAs by no swimmers, just diver <strong>Daphne Wils,<\/strong> who did not score.<\/p>\n<p>The men were seventh out of eight teams at the Big Ten Championships. The women were ninth in a 12-team field.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as 2022, they had sent six men and one woman to NCAAs. Murphy coached three athletes who medaled at NCAAs: Irish Olympian <strong>Shane Ryan,<\/strong> American national teamer <strong>Ally McHugh<\/strong> and diver <strong>Hector Garcia Boissier.<\/strong> Three Penn State swimmers \u2013 Ryan and Mexican internationals <strong>Gabe Castano<\/strong> and <strong>Melissa Rodriguez<\/strong> \u2013 represented the school at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy was the seventh coach in the men\u2019s program\u2019s history and the fifth for the women. He arrived in State College after 15 seasons as the head coach of Harvard\u2019s men\u2019s team.
