NCAA Men’s Championships: Josh Liendo Claims Third Title With Huge Final Turn in 100 Freestyle<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A group of elite sprinters have competed against each other several times this week, relays, the 50 free, some the 200 free or 100 butterfly.<\/p>\n

The top sprinters converged in the 100 freestyle on the final night of the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships from Indianapolis, with speed and more speed.<\/p>\n

Florida’s Josh Liendo<\/strong> got to the wall first with a strong back-half of the race to pull away in the final 15 yards and win in 40.20.<\/p>\n

At the 50, it was Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano<\/strong> at 19.11 just ahead Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks<\/strong> (19.21) and Liendo (19.28).<\/p>\n

But with a strong final turn Liendo pushed passed the field to win his third title of the meet.<\/p>\n

“I had to give it everything I have. It was a really fast field,” Liendo said in the on-deck interview.<\/p>\n

Liendo won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly earlier in the meet becoming the first Florida swimmer to sweep those events since Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel the pressure. There is definitely some pressure. I just tried not to think too much about it. Each time it was just me getting up and racing,” Liendo said. “I am pretty happy with that. Last year getting it done in the 100 free, and this year getting all three, it is really exciting to continue (from here).”<\/p>\n

His trio of titles helped the Gators finish third as a team and actually be in the title hunt for the first time in years.<\/p>\n

“That pressure for the relays, every time we were gunning for the win. It is awesome to see the guys you train with improve so much and it is motivating,” Liendo said. “It is really good. We can build that momentum for next year.”<\/p>\n

Gui Caribe Santos<\/strong> of Tennessee took second in 40.55, just ahead of Cal’s Jack Alexy<\/strong> (40.59), Crooks (40.66) and Guiliano (40.66).<\/p>\n

Virginia’s Matt Brownstead<\/strong> (41.40) and Arizona State’s Jack Dolan<\/strong> tied for sixth and Cal’s Bjorn Seeliger<\/strong> was eighth (41.80).<\/p>\n

Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan<\/strong> and NC State’s Luke Miller<\/strong> tied to win the NCAA consolation final in 41.27.<\/p>\n
