In a rematch of last year\u2019s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women\u2019s water polo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maacsports.com\/news\/2023\/4\/30\/untitled-story.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">championship final<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Wagner College, for a decade the MAAC\u2019s top team, crossed the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verrazano-Narrows Bridge from Staten Island <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to face the upstart Sharks of Long Island University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coaches might soft-pedal a regular season rivalry, but the LIU fans who crowded the narrow decks at the Steinberg Wellness Center knew that this was must-see polo. They shouted and banged on anything available but for naught: the Seahawks broke open a close match in the second half to record a 13-10 victory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m super proud of the kids\u2014how they played and handled adversity,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wagner Head Coach <\/span><b>Josh Hower<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said on the pool deck. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was an electric environment and fun to be part of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIU Head Coach <\/span><b>Gabby Juarez<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was sanguine regarding the outcome, as her top priority is preparing for the postseason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe wanted to play this game hard to understand where things go wrong\u2014and know what works for us,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said after the match.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt means something in regard to regular season placings, but all that matters is championships.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ah yes, championships. After a run of six-straight MAAC titles\u2014interrupted only in 2021 due to Covid\u2014last May the Seahawks were prepped for yet another conference crown as well as the MAAC\u2019s automatic NCAA berth. The Sharks swooped in and did what no other MAAC team had done in eight years: beat the Seahawks in the water. A young program that has only played women\u2019s polo since 2020, building a passionate fan base represents a major accomplishment for Juarez and her players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a drawback having half-shallow\/half-deep [pool at LIU] but having a home game with our fans is great,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIU\u2019s original and only coach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI loved the support from LIU fans\u2014it makes me feel welcome,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said <\/span><b>Sydney deVroedt,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a transfer this year from St. Francis Brooklyn.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWhen you come into a game like this it\u2019s nice to know fans have your back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone welcomed the heightened atmosphere. Wagner\u2019s <\/span><b>Carlota Alfonso<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who registered five goals, said: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have been preparing for this the whole season because of the final [last year]. We want to win the championship and playing at the LIU pool we knew was going to be hard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After two physical periods in LIU\u2019s shallow-deep configuration, where teams switch sides every quarter, the Seahawks held a 5-4 lead. They took advantage of the Sharks having to defend deep water in period three, expanding their lead to 10-7, then were never headed as they closed out the win, their sixth in seven meetings all-time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coach Hower was pleased with his Seahawks\u2019 performance, singling out Alonso, captain <\/span><b>Pip Nash <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(three goals) and <\/span><b>Andrea Arias<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a goal, five earned exclusions) as significant contributors to the win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt means a lot for us to execute at a high level\u2014to do the standard of what we\u2019re doing on defense and [to] focus on ourselves,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hower said, then added: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ceverything we\u2019re doing in conference, it\u2019s a next step for accomplishing what we want to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saying that this year was \u201ccompletely different\u201d from 2023, Hower downplayed the win, saying: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not a revenge game\u2014it doesn\u2019t mean anything other than it\u2019s a conference opponent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Juarez, Hower pointed out: it\u2019s really all about how you finish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s about our journey to become the best version of ourselves,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[T]he 2023 team was very special; we executed a lot of our goals but didn\u2019t tick that final box\u2014but still had a fantastic year\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And no mention of the streak from the coach\u2014now 95 straight against MAAC foes during the regular season. Alonso then put that about the streak in a box and wrapped it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe streak at the end is just a number,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she said.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt&#8217;s nice to keep winning games but\u2026 the important part is a championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juarez also doesn\u2019t dwell on the past, instead focusing on what lies ahead, including qualifying for a postseason berth for a fourth consecutive season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs long as we do what we need for the next two weekends we should go to the [MAAC] tournament,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With coaches sidestepping the obvious, it took a newcomer to provide context for what\u2019s become a full-blown rivalry in the Big Apple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love playing this level and style of water polo,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deVroedt gushed after the match. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s amazing!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Now, Wagner Claims New York Water Polo Bragging Rights With Win Over LIU BROOKLYN, NY.
