She was 37 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Her passing was confirmed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sadefrn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SADEF RN<\/a>, her club in Brazil. Neves, full name Joana Maria Jaciara da Silva Neves Euz\u00e9bio, went into cardiac arrest while in Sao Paolo undergoing tests to diagnose the cause of recent seizures. She had been in at the Paralympic Training Center.<\/p>\n<p>The Brazilian Ministry of Sport and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee both posted remembrances of Neves. The Ministry of Sport posted <a href=\"https:\/\/cpb.org.br\/noticias\/nota-de-pesar-falecimento-de-joana-neves-medalhista-paralimpica-na-natacao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a lengthy note of condolence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"pt\">Que seu legado continue a nos inspirar e que sua alegria seja eternamente lembrada.<\/p>\n<p>Para sempre em nossos cora\u00e7\u00f5es, Joana Neves (conhecida como Joaninha, Peixinha). \ud83d\udda4 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KpzstDTXtv\">pic.twitter.com\/KpzstDTXtv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Comit\u00ea Paral\u00edmpico Brasileiro (@cpboficial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cpboficial\/status\/1769819754447991116?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 18, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Neves won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Paralympics in the S5 50 butterfly. She won three medals before her home county four years later in Rio, including silver in the S5 50 free, bronze in the S5 100 free and mixed freestyle relay silver.<\/p>\n<p>Neves added a relay bronze in Tokyo in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>She won a pair of gold medals, including in the S5 50 free, at the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow. She won two gold and 11 total medals at Worlds. She competed at the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships in Portugal, where she won silver in the S5 50 free and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2022-world-para-swimming-championships-americans-set-world-record-in-mixed-medley-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two bronze medals, one in an Americas record<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Neves was born with achondroplasia, a condition that affects bone growth. She began swimming on a doctor\u2019s recommendation and connected with SADEF (Sociedade Amigos do Deficiente F\u00edsico do Rio Grande do Norte).
