There is plenty of drama heading into a final day in which the top two women\u2019s teams are separated by three points.<\/p>\n<p>But as significant as all of that was the swim by <strong>Kate Augustyn,<\/strong> the MIT junior matching her NCAA record in the women\u2019s 100 backstroke with a time of 53.41 seconds. Hamilton                            1<\/pre>\n<h4>Men\u2019s 200 butterfly<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Frank Applebaum\u2019s<\/strong> quest for a third straight title was spoiled by last year\u2019s runner-up. <strong>Justin Finkel<\/strong> of Connecticut College delivered a savage final 50 to take the title away from Applebaum by .18 seconds. Finkel went 1:43.21, an NCAA record, taking down Applebaum\u2019s mark. He finished in 26.82 to close a gap of more than a second after 150 yards, Applebaum second in 1:43.39.<\/p>\n<p>Applebaum, a junior from Claremont Mudd Scripps, had set NCAA records of 1:44.01 and 1:43.96 the last two years. Finkel was second in 1:44.32 last year.<\/p>\n<p>The top four are the same as last year, though the order is jumbled. <strong>Avery Clapp<\/strong> of Johns Hopkins went from fourth to third in 1:44.56. That came at the expense of last year\u2019s bronze medalist, Chicago\u2019s <strong>Jesse Ssengonzi,<\/strong> who was fourth in 1:44.93. Teammate <strong>Cooper Costello<\/strong> was fifth, the Maroons hopping to second in the team standings. The NYU junior went 1:58.50, seven tenths quicker than her winning time in 2022. She was a second ahead of last year\u2019s winner, Chicago\u2019s <strong>Alesha Kelly,<\/strong> after 100 meters and held that edge to the end. Kelly was second in 1:59.62. Denison\u2019s <strong>Emily Harris<\/strong> took bronze in 2:00.03.<\/p>\n<p>NYU put three in the top five, <strong>Nicole Ranile<\/strong> and <strong>Reina Gomez<\/strong> following. <strong>Youngju Baik<\/strong> was eighth. He had been tied for second in prelims. His time edged Carnegie Mellon freshman <strong>Brayden Morford,<\/strong> who secured silver in 47.04. Her time erased the 2013 standard set by Kenyon\u2019s <strong>Celia Oberholzer<\/strong> at 53.46. Augustyn had gone 53.41 a night earlier in the 400 medley relay, with MIT placing third.<\/p>\n<p>Williams\u2019 <strong>Sophia Verkleeren<\/strong> was second in 53.87. <strong>Sammi Theile<\/strong> of Austin finished third in 54.73. Behind her was Emory senior <strong>Megan Jungers<\/strong> in 54.80. Jungers was second each of the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>Augustyn was third in the event last year. Meyer went 52.26, a half-second quicker than he was in prelims.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Garrett Clasen,<\/strong> last year\u2019s silver medalist, slid down a spot to third in 42.39. The 2023 champion repeated with a time of 59.80 that left the field behind. She was 0.99 seconds up on <strong>Edenna Chen,<\/strong> MIT\u2019s fifth-year and the 2022 champion. Fadely was .03 short of displacing Denison\u2019s <strong>KT Kustritz,<\/strong> the record-holder from 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyon\u2019s <strong>Gabriella Wei<\/strong> was third. He scored 581.15 points to easily prevail. While it\u2019s 20 points shy of his NCAA record from 2023, it was still well clear of the 526.45 of <strong>Trent Makowiec<\/strong> of SUNY Geneseo. Zavaleta was the only diver to top 500 points in both prelims and finals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conor Compton<\/strong> of Alfred State was third. The win went to Williams in 6:29.05, the team of <strong>Alexander Atherton, Ryan Nunez, Carter Anderson<\/strong> and <strong>Oliver Schalet.<\/strong> Emory\u2019s consolation prize, in addition to the silver medal in 3:29.63, was to consolidate its edge in the team standings.
