Spending time with <\/span><b>Adam Wright<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, UCLA men\u2019s and women\u2019s water polo head coach, is like being in the company of a powerful politician. Wright is surrounded by success; there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/dodd-brothers-chase-and-ryder-hoping-to-be-part-of-team-usa-trip-to-paris-olympics\/\"><b>Chase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Ryder Dodd<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, once and future Bruins, who hope to represent the U.S. in the Paris Olympics. Or, <\/span><b>Maddie Musselman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usawaterpolo.org\/news\/2023\/7\/28\/womens-senior-national-team-maddie-musselman-named-2022-world-aquatics-womens-water-polo-athlete-of-the-year.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two-time Olympic gold medalist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who watched her former college side power its way to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ucirvinesports.com\/sports\/2024\/1\/10\/wwp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 Barbara Kalbus Invitational<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> title at Corona del Mar High School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also on hand: <\/span><b>Brandon Brooks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Wright\u2019s teammate on UCLA\u2019s 1999 and 2000 NCAA champions and on the 2004 and 2008 Olympic squads. Brooks was the coach for Bruin women\u2019s polo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/uclas-brooks-steps-down-after-8-seasons-stanford-is-likely-culprit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">until 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when Wright added that program to his leadership of UCLA\u2019s men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there\u2019s the parents whose daughters play for the charismatic UCLA coach. They want to shake Wright\u2019s hand and check in on their kid\u2019s progress. Turns out, the top-ranked Bruins (15-0) are doing great; it\u2019s why Wright is as popular here in the heart of Orange County\u2019s rabid polo culture as he is in Westwood, the cradle of championships defined by the late, great <\/span><b>John Wooden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/05\/sports\/ncaabasketball\/05wooden.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wizard of Westwood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won a record ten NCAA men\u2019s basketball titles; Wright\u2019s been part of seven national championships\u2014four as a coach, two as a player and one as an assistant\u2014and you gotta believe that there are more in store for the 46-year-old, who continues to succeed no matter what happens in the pool or in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following is an interview w\/Adam Wright conducted in February at Corona del Mar High School.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">***<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright spoke after his team won a <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/uclabruins.com\/news\/2024\/2\/25\/womens-water-polo-no-1-ucla-orchestrates-epic-run-to-beat-no-2-hawai-i-15-9\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15-9 match against #2 Hawai\u2019i<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a contest in which the Rainbow Wahine dominated the first 12 minutes, racing out to an 8-3 lead before the Bruins came roaring back<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>SW: A tough start for the Bruins is balanced by an impressive\u2014and decisive\u2014finish.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam Wright:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The disappointing part is [in] the first half we didn\u2019t take care of the ball. The first quarter [we had] seven turnovers. That\u2019s almost every possession. And you\u2019ve got to credit Hawai\u2019i, they\u2019ve been playing really well this year. She keeps us in the game. We showed who we are in the second half, the way we\u2019re supposed to play defense, the way we\u2019re supposed to counter, the way teams are supposed to chase us. If we do that from the beginning it pays dividends. We had to have some of our girls play the whole game; if we did it the right way from the beginning now you\u2019re getting everybody out there in the water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For sure it\u2019s a tale of two halves. What I like from that game is there\u2019s so much to learn. Everybody\u2019s going to bring their best game and if you\u2019re not ready from the get-go you\u2019ll find yourself in a tough spot really quick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Wright knows,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the only non-MPSF team to qualify for an NCAA final is Loyola Marymount in 2004. And the only Pac-12 team besides Stanford, UCLA and USC to play for a national title was Cal in 2010<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.]<\/span><b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>SW: If Hawai\u2019i had found a way to beat you they\u2019d be #1, which would be the first time ever for them. This is an Olympic year, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-womens-water-polo-preview-olympic-year-may-have-impact-on-season-ahead\/\"><b>which scrambles everything<\/b><\/a><b> for the top teams. Will you see Hawai\u2019i again in an NCAA final?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They\u2019ve already positioned themselves in a really good spot. They\u2019re really good! They\u2019ve got two incredible centers [<\/span><b>Raha Peiravani<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Bia Mantellato Dias<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They\u2019ve got great shooters, they\u2019ve got good goalie play, they\u2019ve got the left-hander back from Doha [<\/span><b>Bernadette Doyle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I see them at the last tournament of the year at Cal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest thing Hawai\u2019i has is they\u2019re really dynamic. And they have shooters. You see the way they pass the ball in the 6-on-5. It\u2019s very crisp\u2026 actually, it\u2019s awesome. Coach Mo (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/with-curtain-set-to-drop-on-coaching-career-maureen-cole-leading-hawaii-in-chase-of-ncaa-water-polo-crown\/\"><b>Maureen Cole<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiathletics.com\/news\/2024\/3\/5\/womens-water-polo-robinson-selected-as-next-rainbow-wahine-water-polo-coach.aspx\"><b>James Robinson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was with me as a player at UCLA and on our staff, they\u2019re doing an incredible job. I have no doubt they\u2019ll be one of the teams there at the end; they\u2019re the real deal, for sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last fall, the UCLA men raced through the regular season undefeated, only to fall twice in the MPSF tournament. They earned the top seed in the NCAA tournament but fell 11-9 to Cal, the team\u2019s third loss in five games to end the season. During the season, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/nhl\/ucla-water-polo-rallying-around-coach-adam-wright-s-loss-on-ncaa-title-game-run\/ar-AA1kUoDW\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright dealt with his father\u2019s illness<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>After getting through the regular men\u2019s season in 2023 unbeaten, everything crashed down in the MPSF tournament and ended with a loss to Cal in the NCAA final.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of people don\u2019t understand the adversity our men\u2019s team truly had. I wanted <\/span><b>Chase Dodd<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to pursue his goal of making the Olympic team, so I said to him: you\u2019re going to redshirt and keep your focus there. He could have played.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We lost <\/span><b>Tommy Gruwell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 12 days before camp. He made the decision to pursue the national team. That\u2019s a big hit for us. <\/span><b>Gianpiero Di Martire<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014who had hand surgery two years ago and had been great\u2014all the sudden he has issues. So we lost him for the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bernardo Maurizi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our goalie who was an NCAA player of the tournament [in 2022] gets hit in the head on the second day of preseason and he\u2019s out for six weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When there\u2019s adversity you find out who you are. For my personal life, [given] how much stuff went on with my dad, it was one of the most enjoyable seasons ever. So many young players doing so many great things, it\u2019s gonna serve us well for the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For us it&#8217;s never about a record, it\u2019s about the process. If you had asked me before the season: Do you think we\u2019re going to go undefeated? I would have laughed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guys, they did the process the right way and it put us in a position to have a really great year. The hard part you know is the end. But Cal, the guy in the middle, <\/span><b>[Nik} <\/b><b>Papanikolaou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is beyond a special player. What <\/span><b>Kirk [Everist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Cal coach] did with the group he assembled is truly amazing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To go out on the year 3-1 against Cal\u2014all the stuff we went through, if you were to ask me I\u2019d say that\u2019s a tough feat. Based on where we were over the last eight games with them the last two and a half years, they kind of had our number. Seven of the eight are overtime but they\u2019re always winning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get to that point you want it so bad for the guys\u2026 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/news\/waterpolo-men\/article\/2023-12-02\/cal-wins-2023-ncaa-mens-water-polo-national-championship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they left everything out there<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What you get in return for the program in the future is just massive. The group, when they believe in and trust each other, that carries forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re going to have a special group; that doesn\u2019t guarantee anything, but it organically builds something special amongst the guys.
