﻿{"id":579489,"date":"2024-03-02T17:02:58","date_gmt":"2024-03-03T00:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=579489"},"modified":"2024-03-02T22:18:07","modified_gmt":"2024-03-03T05:18:07","slug":"big-ten-mens-championships-night-4-indiana-has-third-straight-title-in-sight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-mens-championships-night-4-indiana-has-third-straight-title-in-sight\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Ten Men\u2019s Championships, Night 4: Brendan Burns, Jassen Yep Cap Indiana&#8217;s Third Straight Title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Big Ten Men\u2019s Championships, Night 4: Brendan Burns, Jassen Yep Cap Indiana&#8217;s Third Straight Title<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A feverish Friday and a solid Saturday morning had Indiana in a powerful position as the Big Ten Men\u2019s Championships headed to their fourth and final night.<\/p>\n<p>Four golds and 10 total medals brought home the banner in emphatic fashion.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoosiers won four events on the final night at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, earning Indiana its third straight title and sixth in eight years. <strong>Brendan Burns<\/strong> won the 200 backstroke and finished third (behind teammate <strong>Tomer Frankel<\/strong>) in the 200 fly. <strong>Jassen Yep<\/strong> won the 200 breaststroke, <strong>Carson Tyler<\/strong> claimed platform diving and the 400 free relay made it four wins in five team events for the Hoosiers.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoosiers scored 1,520 points, slightly less than the 1,595.5 they used to win last year but more than the 1,499.5 from 2022. Ohio State scored 1,226 points to finish second for the third straight year. Michigan is third for the third straight year with 1,153.5 points.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u2019s <strong>Gal Groumi<\/strong>, who added the 200 fly title to his 200 IM crown, was named the Swimmer of the Championships. Burns touched in 1:39.50, well behind his meet record from last year (1:38.22). He was .24 ahead of Van Westering, holding off the junior\u2019s charge coming home in 25.36. Szabados went 42.09, Torepe-Ormsby 42.10.<\/p>\n<p>The race for bronze wasn\u2019t boring either. <strong>Tomas Navikonis,<\/strong> the 200 free champ, was seventh at the halfway point but surged with the only sub-22 final 50 (21.80) to bronze in 42.22. Penn State\u2019s <strong>Victor Baganha<\/strong> was fifth. Frankel, the 100 fly champ, added 200 fly silver in 1:39.80. Burns, on the back end of a double, was a second shy of his meet record from 2021 in 1:40.24 but still more than good enough for a medal. He was nearly 30 ahead of Purdue\u2019s <strong>Jordan Rzepka,<\/strong> who took silver in 433.65. <strong>Max Weinrich<\/strong> of Indiana was third in 395.55, with teammate <strong>Quinn Henninger<\/strong> seventh. The foursome of <strong>Tomer Frankel, Gavin Wight, Rafael Miroslaw<\/strong> and <strong>Mikkel Lee<\/strong> won in 2:48.19, but they had a battle with Michigan, just .26 seconds ahead of the Wolverines. They were separated by .01 seconds on the final handoff, but Lee split 41.76 to outdistance the Michigan anchor. Miroslaw, perhaps stung y missing the A final of the 100 free, had the Hoosiers\u2019 fastest split at 41.56.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bence Szabados<\/strong> had the top split of the race in 41.21 to put Michigan up by eight tenths at the halfway point, he and <strong>Gal Groumi<\/strong> combining for a quick front half. Michigan was second in an NCAA A Cut 2:48.45.<\/p>\n<p>Third was Wisconsin in 2:50.48, followed four tenths later by Ohio State.<\/p>\n<pre><b> Event 21  Men 400 Yard Freestyle
