NEWPORT BEACH, CA. In sports, as in life, it\u2019s always best to walk away while you\u2019re ahead. In the case of <\/span>Maureen Cole<\/b>, head coach for the Hawai\u2019i women\u2019s water polo team, she\u2019s determined to finish her gig by leading the Rainbow Wahine to the greatest season in their history.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then leaving with no regrets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saying that she\u2019s \u201cbeen in college since 1999\u201d\u2014after a playing career at UCLA (2000-3; three NCAA titles), Cole was an assistant at Hawai\u2019i from 2007 until being elevated to head coach in 2012\u2014she will <\/span>leave her mark<\/span><\/a> on the Hawai\u2019i\u2019 record books. With 214\u2014and counting\u2014wins, Cole is not only the longest-tenured coach in program history, she\u2019s also the winningest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cole\u2019s rivals, who know her as \u201cCoach Mo,\u201d have taken note of her success. During last week\u2019s Barbara Kalbus Invitational, <\/span>Dan Klatt<\/b>, head coach for UC-Irvine women\u2019s water polo for all of Cole\u2019s tenure, was complimentary of his rival and friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m not playing against Mo, I\u2019m always cheering for her,\u201d he said. \u201cShe is an incredible role model and advocate for female coaches. She has battled her way through adversity in coaching. Her values, her intensity and her love for her teams has stayed consistent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“There is not another coach coaching right now that will miss her more than I will. I have so much respect and love for the way she [coaches] and the passion she does it with,\u201d Klatt said, then added: \u201dWe\u2019re both in the Big West; we\u2019re both gonna try and win it. [Hawai\u2019i] has an excellent team and I will be rooting for them if it\u2019s not us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Following is an interview with Cole conducted at the 2024 Kalbus Invite. It has been edited for brevity.<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n

This year is special because you are leaving. But Hawai\u2019i is #2 in the nation for the first time ever and a prime contender for a national championship.<\/b><\/p>\n

Maureen Cole:<\/span><\/i> It\u2019s still really early and there\u2019s a lot of water polo to be played. We’ve had a good start, and this is always an interesting year\u2014an Olympic year\u2014because we\u2019re missing people, Stanford\u2019s missing people, everyone\u2019s missing someone. So it automatically makes the playing field a little more level. And that\u2019s the situation where we\u2019ve gotten the jump on a couple of teams. But it\u2019s still early and there\u2019s a lot of water polo to be played.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You announced your retirement before this season began. Could that be why your athletes are playing so well this season?<\/b><\/p>\n

MC:<\/span><\/i> As much as they love me\u2014just kidding!\u2014we look at every year in college water polo as super special because we only have a team [for] one year. The seniors, me, everyone\u2014this is special because this group will only be together one time. And the culture with that group is special. It\u2019s not me, it\u2019s everybody\u2014and it\u2019s just as important for the seniors as the freshmen.<\/span><\/p>\n

No team besides Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA and LMU (2004) has ever played for an NCAA championship. Yet here is Hawai\u2019i playing as well as anyone. Can a non-MPSF team play for a national championship this year?<\/b><\/p>\n

MC:<\/span><\/i> It\u2019s definitely possible, and we\u2019d love for it to be us. It\u2019s really level; who’s playing the best game in May. There\u2019s so much room for improvement for all the teams right now so it\u2019s who\u2019s peaking at the right time. There\u2019s a lot of teams that have that opportunity this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

What will it take for Hawai\u2019i to get past Big West opponents and make NCAAs?<\/b><\/p>\n

MC:<\/span><\/i> It\u2019s going to take us continuing to get better. As you saw UCI just had a great game against Michigan\u2014they\u2019re always going to be tough. Long Beach is tough, UCSD has a good team this year. Our conference is super competitive, as is the MPSF. Just peaking at the right time, continuing to learn\u2014we have a lot of new people this year combined with some girls who have been around. It\u2019s a lot of improvement [to be made] in terms of gelling together, learning our system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though you\u2019re fully invested in this season, given your impending retirement, is there anything that comes to mind about seasons past?<\/b><\/p>\n

MC:<\/span><\/i> There are so many [memories] it\u2019s really hard to pick one. Relationships\u2026 each group is so unique each year. The first Big West championship (2013); that group will always have a special place in my heart. But every group has been so special\u2026 and then the girls go on to have families and be great in their careers. Keeping in touch with them has been a really fun part of [coaching]. As I\u2019ve gotten older they\u2019ve gotten older too and gone on to do some great things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I look forward to watching this current group continue to get better after I\u2019m gone.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019re choosing to leave the program on top, which is never easy. What\u2019s next in life for Maureen Cole?<\/b><\/p>\n

MC:<\/span><\/i> It\u2019s been such a layered process coming to this [decision], which I came to a couple of years ago. It\u2019s a life I want to change; I\u2019ve been in college since 1999. I want to see what else life\u2019s got to offer when I open up the period of time after school\u2014get healthy, exercise, be around my family more, start a new career. I\u2019m not that old.
