The Wolfpack team of Quintin McCarty, Drew Salls, Noah Henderson and Luke Miller teamed up to take down the American mark in the 200 free relay Wednesday evening at the ACC Championships, overcoming early challenges by Notre Dame, Virginia and Virginia Tech to claim a comfortable relay win.

On the opening leg, Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano, fresh off a sizzling time of 18.57 in the 50 free prelims, led off in 18.63 to take a slim lead on Virginia’s Matt Brownstead (18.74), Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan (18.90) and McCarty (18.93). The field closed in down the stretch, but Bustos hung on to finish in 1:40.75, less than a half-second off his meet record of 1:40.31 set last season.

That time ranks Bustos fourth in the nation, trailing only the Arizona State duo of Leon Marchand and Hubert Kos plus Cal’s Destin Lasco, the American-record holder in the event. Bustos took sixth in the final at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Thanks to his brilliant breaststroke split, no surprise for a swimmer who placed ninth in the 200-meter breast at last week’s World Championships, Coll Marti took second in 1:41.51, just holding off a late surge from Virginia’s Tim Connery (1:41.86). Also finishing hard was NC State’s Daniel Diehl, with the midseason enrollee clocking 1:41.97 for fourth in his first individual conference final.

Event 12 Men 200 Yard IM
=========================================================================
MEET: # 1:40.31 2/15/2023 Arsenio Bustos, NC State
CONF: % 1:39.35  3/24/2019 Andreas Vazaios, NCSU-NC
AMER: $ 1:38.10  3/23/2023 Destin Lasco, California
USOP: & 1:36.34 3/24/2023 Leon Marchand, Arizona St.
NCAA: ! 1:36.34 3/24/2022 Leon Marchand, Arizona St.
Pool: * 1:39.26  11/16/2023Hubert Kos, ASU
1:41.03  A
1:43.14  IV23 Invited NCAA 2023
1:46.16  B
Name Year School Prelims Finals Points
=========================================================================
=== A - Final ===

1 Bustos, Arsenio     NC State          1:42.46    1:40.75 A       32
r:+0.64  21.28        46.14 (24.86)
1:15.72 (29.58)     1:40.75 (25.03)
2 Coll Marti, Car     VA Tech           1:42.80    1:41.51 IV23    28
r:+0.64  21.88        46.99 (25.11)
1:16.01 (29.02)     1:41.51 (25.50)
3 Connery, Timoth     UVA               1:42.00    1:41.86 IV23    27
r:+0.69  21.80        47.37 (25.57)
1:17.12 (29.75)     1:41.86 (24.74)
4 Diehl, Daniel       NC State          1:42.77    1:41.97 IV23    26
r:+0.69  22.28        48.07 (25.79)
1:17.51 (29.44)     1:41.97 (24.46)
5 Herbet, Mason       FSU               1:43.52    1:43.05 IV23    25
r:+0.66  22.05        47.27 (25.22)
1:17.71 (30.44)     1:43.05 (25.34)
6 Hoover, Samuel      NC State          1:43.14    1:43.60 B       24
r:+0.64  22.03        48.67 (26.64)
1:19.03 (30.36)     1:43.60 (24.57)
7 Sergile, Sebast     UVA               1:43.81    1:43.96 B       23
r:+0.66  22.28        48.09 (25.81)
1:18.41 (30.32)     1:43.96 (25.55)
8 Edge, James         Notre Dame        1:43.63    1:44.80 B       22
r:+0.64  22.38        48.68 (26.30)
1:18.91 (30.23)     1:44.80 (25.89)

Men’s 50 Freestyle

Chris Guiliano has come a long way in his career since his last ACC title one year ago.
