That was not the case this year, for good reason \u2014 Virginia did not include any of the swimmers who swam on last year&#8217;s NCAA-title-winning and record-setting quartet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Lexi Cuomo<\/strong> have both concluded their college swimming careers, but sisters\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> were missing. However, that absence set up both Walsh sisters to race on all four remaining Virginia relays at this meet, including the 800 freestyle relay later in Tuesday night&#8217;s session. And that 800 free relay, which featured Gretchen racing an event at a championship meet for the first time, featured a magical, near-record-breaking performance.<\/p>\n<p>On the leadoff leg, Gretchen put a serious scare into the American record, the 1:39.10 set by\u00a0<strong>Missy Franklin<\/strong> nine years ago. At the 50-yard mark, Walsh was seven tenths under record pace and still six tenths up at the halfway point before she faded slightly. Still, Gretchen came into the wall at 1:40.23, a mark that only Franklin and\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(1:39.80) have ever surpassed.<\/p>\n<p>At that point, Virginia&#8217;s lead was enormous, and the next three Cavaliers extended the margin. Alex split 1:41.23, just off the 1:41.18 she swam on last year&#8217;s NCAA-title-winning relay, while\u00a0<strong>Aimee Canny\u00a0<\/strong>split 1:42.24 and\u00a0<strong>Ella Nelson<\/strong> came home in 1:42.58. The Virginia women were so far ahead of the field that even Nelson, the slowest of the four swimmers, was almost a second-and-a-half quicker than the next-best split in the field, the 1:43.98 of Louisville&#8217;s <strong>Paige Hetrick<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, Virginia&#8217;s swim resulted in a final mark of 6:46.28, which was just 37-hundredths off the American, NCAA and U.S. Open records of 6:45.91 established by Stanford in 2017. That Stanford squad included three Olympians,\u00a0<strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lia Neal<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, along with multi-time NCAA champion\u00a0<strong>Ella Eastin<\/strong>, and the Cavaliers still managed to beat the time. In the process, Virginia crushed the conference record of 6:49.82 set in winning last year&#8217;s NCAA title.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia could take another shot at the mark at the NCAA Championships next month, although Gretchen could move off this relay to focus on the four sprint relays. Still, with Gretchen on the squad or another swimmer such as <strong>Reilly Tiltmann <\/strong>or <strong>Maxine Parker<\/strong> taking the fourth spot, Virginia will be heavy favorites on the national level.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, it was a battle for second place between the rest of the teams in the field, but Louisville distinguished itself quickly, with\u00a0<strong>Fernanda <\/strong><strong>Gomes Celidonio<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Summer Cardwell<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Tristen Ulett<\/strong> all going 1:45s before Hetrick shined on the anchor leg. Louisville came in at 7:00.31 for an &#8220;A&#8221; cut for the NCAA Championships. href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/acc-championships-nc-state-men-blast-american-record-in-200-medley-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NC State&#8217;s men set an American record<\/a> in winning the 200 medley relay while finals in women&#8217;s 3-meter diving and men&#8217;s 1-meter diving were contested.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/acc-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sidearmstats.com\/acc\/swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Women&#8217;s 200 Medley Relay<\/h2>\n<p>No Walsh sisters, no problem, at least on this occasion. Even without the services of that powerhouse sister duo, Virginia won the opening event of the ACC Championships by four tenths, with the team of\u00a0<strong>Reilly Tiltmann<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jasmine Nocentini<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Carly Novelline<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Maxine Parker<\/strong> combining for a time of 1:33.84, just 15-hundredths off Virginia&#8217;s season-best time that ranks tops in the country this season.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia led wire-to-wire, with Nocentini opening up the lead with her 25.49 breaststroke split, a mark believed to be quicker than any breaststroker in history aside from <strong>Lilly King<\/strong>. Parker closed in 21.27 to hold off a stunning finish from NC State&#8217;s <strong>Katharine Berkoff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia was more than two seconds off the American and NCAA records of 1:31.53 a completely different Cavaliers squad set last season, but given the addition of Nocentini and the improvement of Parker, Virginia could plausibly break this mark at the NCAA Championships next month. Last year, <strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> led off in 22.77, one-and-a-half seconds quicker than Tiltmann&#8217;s opening split here, and <b>Alex Walsh<\/b> would likely be capable of splitting a half-second quicker than Novelline on fly.<\/p>\n<p>NC State came in second at 1:34.22, good for No. 5 in the national rankings, with\u00a0<strong>Kennedy Noble<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Abby Arens<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Miriam Sheehan<\/strong> and Berkoff racing for the Wolfpack. Berkoff came home in 20.40, also among the quickest splits in history;\u00a0<strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Maggie Mac Neil<\/strong> were the only two racers to beat that time at last year&#8217;s NCAAs.<\/p>\n<p>Third went to North Carolina in 1:35.15, with\u00a0<strong>Greer Pattison<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Skyler Smith<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ellie Vannote<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Delaney Carlton<\/strong> racing for the Tar Heels. Vazquez edged out Duke&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mago Omera<\/strong>, who was the top qualifier out of prelims, by less than 11 points to take the title.
