{"id":578613,"date":"2024-02-20T13:38:04","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T20:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=578613"},"modified":"2024-02-20T13:38:04","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T20:38:04","slug":"dr-andrew-young-named-cscaas-charles-mccaffree-award-winner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/dr-andrew-young-named-cscaas-charles-mccaffree-award-winner\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Andrew Young Named CSCAA\u2019s Charles McCaffree Award Winner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dr. Andrew Young Named CSCAA\u2019s Charles McCaffree Award Winner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. <strong>Andrew Young<\/strong>, a Howard University alum and trailblazer for Black swimming in America, is the 2024 recipient of the CSCAA\u2019s Charles McCaffree Award.<\/p>\n<p>The award from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America recognizes \u201ca swimming or diving graduate who has achieved outstanding success outside of the pool.\u201d Young, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrew_Young\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Congressman from Georgia in the 1970s<\/a> who was appointed the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and served eight years as Atlanta\u2019s mayor, swam at Howard University before his lengthy political career.<\/p>\n<p>Young, who will turn 92 in March, swam at Howard in the 1950s. As mayor of Atlanta, he allocated more than $1 million to increase citywide access to pools, particularly for its Black citizens. An advisor to Dr. <strong>Martin Luther King<\/strong> and the executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the civil rights movement, Young was appointed ambassador by President <strong>Jimmy Carter<\/strong>, and he played a significant role in helping Atlanta land the 1996 Summer Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndrew Young&#8217;s influence resonates deeply within Howard University, the swimming community, and across the nation,\u201d Howard head coach <strong>Nic Askew<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/hubison.com\/news\/2024\/2\/14\/mens-swimming-and-diving-cscaa-honors-howards-andrew-young-with-mccaffree-award.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a university statement<\/a>. \u201cI am constantly inspired and grateful for the opportunity to learn from Mr. Young. Sharing news of his well-deserved award was a profound honor. We are all enriched by his enduring impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among Young\u2019s numerous other accolades is the International Swimming Hall of Fame\u2019s Gold Medallion Award, the first Black recipient <a href=\"https:\/\/ishof.org\/awards\/gold-medallion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when it was bestowed upon him in 1992<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndrew Young&#8217;s influence extends far beyond the boundaries of the swimming community,\u201d CSCAA Executive Director <strong>Samantha Barany<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscaa.org\/news\/2021\/andrewyoung2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a press release<\/a>. \u201cHis pivotal role as a civil rights advocate, aiding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and contributing to the drafting of both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 had a profound impact on all of society. As a swimmer at Howard University during an era marked by racial segregation in pools, his journey serves as inspiration whose significance may not be fully grasped.
