﻿{"id":578574,"date":"2024-02-19T16:21:02","date_gmt":"2024-02-19T23:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=578574"},"modified":"2024-02-19T16:21:02","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T23:21:02","slug":"mollie-ocallaghan-eager-to-lead-australian-assault-on-olympic-games-in-paris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mollie-ocallaghan-eager-to-lead-australian-assault-on-olympic-games-in-paris\/","title":{"rendered":"Mollie O&#8217;Callaghan Eager to Lead Australian Assault on Olympic Games in Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mollie O&#8217;Callaghan Eager to Lead Australian Assault on Olympic Games in Paris<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>At just 19, <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong>\u2014affectionately known as Mollie O\u2014is a name Australia is quickly recognizing\u00a0as a member of the country\u2019s latest group of swimming golden girls of the pool.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Olympic champions <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong>, <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong>, <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong>, the <strong>Campbell sisters<\/strong>, <strong>Cate and Bronte<\/strong>\u2014and <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong>, along with <strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong>\u2014have catapulted Australia\u2019s women to the top of the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mollie O<\/strong>, as O\u2019Callaghan is affectionately known, is the baby of the group who has been on a trajectory toward swimming greatness since her mum, <strong>Toni<\/strong>, launched a fund-raising appeal to send her daughter to Melbourne for the Australian Schools Championships in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Mollie was just 10 years old and attending Greenbank State School, located in a small working class rural residential suburb in the City of Logan, 40 kilometers (a little less than 25 miles) southwest of Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p>The O\u2019Callaghan family had to raise $5,000 to get their budding young Mollie to nationals after being selected on the Queensland team\u2014a lot of money for any family.<\/p>\n<p>But the community dug deep and got young Mollie her first Queensland tracksuit and her first proper racing suit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA proper racing swimming suit can be more than $300,\u201d Mollie\u2019s mum said at the time&#8230;and then there\u2019s return airfares and uniforms.<\/p>\n<p>Collection boxes were placed at The Coffee Club stores at nearby suburbs in Jimboomba and Browns Plains, kickstarting the appeal with the family overwhelmed with people\u2019s generosity.<\/p>\n<p>And Mollie\u2019s take on her first trip away?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a bit nervous, but looking forward to it\u2014it\u2019ll be a good experience. Last year, I wasn\u2019t here\u2014I was at the World Short Course in Melbourne\u2014so it\u2019s a bit of a weird feeling to come back after a few years and see myself everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not very used to this, but it\u2019s kind of nice to have us swimmers posted everywhere\u2014and I hope it\u2019s inspirational to the younger swimmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember as a kid coming into this meet and seeing the likes of <strong>Cate Campbell<\/strong>, <strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong> and <strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing into the pool, you would see all the teams\u2014it was very inspirational as a young kid and saying, \u2018I want to do that&#8230;I want to be a butterflyer&#8230;or I want to be a backstroker.\u2019 To see those swimmers right in front of you&#8230;it was so inspirational.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever get used to (the notoriety of) it. It\u2019s so special to be considered as one of Swimming Queensland\u2019s idols. We were like brothers, and he has developed the skills of so many great champions, including kids like Mollie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was one of the real forerunners in (mastering) underwater work. He had underwater kicking technique right down to a fine art, imparting his knowledge with our age-group programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when Pete came in, we also introduced a lot of race speed and race-pace work, and his sessions were almost 100% IM and kick sets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe liked to do a lot of kicking, and he wanted his kids to be across all four strokes, especially when they were younger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything he did he timed\u2014he knew what every kid in the squad had to hit at the 15-meter mark and the 25-meter mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was big on setting times for their breakouts, and if you can achieve those times, he told the kids, \u2018You\u2019re in the race.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd everything he did was about winning, whether it was breeding his budgies (a small gregarious Australian parakeet) to coaching those kids. He wanted winners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the impact on Mollie O was career changing, setting her up for Boxall to add his own magical touches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMollie came through our program and become a national champion, like so many others,\u201d said Sansby. \u201cA kid who came to us when she was 8 until she was 15&#8230;and we always knew what she was going to do and what she was capable of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat a brilliant kid\u2014we brought her through hard, she knew how to work. She had that built-in ability to do a lot of underwater work and fast underwater work, and she was always super-quick doing fly kick underwater on her front or on her back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA real good technician\u2014she had a superb kick, a kid who\u2019s got that ankle flexion that you need. She was born with a range of movement that you need to be fast, and Mollie had that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know Pete remembered her fondly when she swam at the Olympics, and like so many of us, so pleased for Mollie\u2014she always had that good work ethic&#8230;and she was a good kid to boot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Boxall told\u00a0<em>Swimming World Magazine<\/em>\u00a0recently, Mollie O is managing by just being herself. \u201cShe does not care (about anything else)&#8230;she has not changed one bit&#8230;not at all&#8230;she just wants to swim&#8230;she just wants to come to the pool and swim&#8230;she does not care about the other stuff!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>AND HER PARIS PROGRAM?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When asked what her likely Olympic program would be and whether she would try and add backstroke into the mix with the 100 and 200 freestyle, O\u2019Callaghan admitted, \u201cIt\u2019s a hard one. The relays are the second goal, and then the backstroke comes third.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>* * *<\/p>\n<p>Mollie has come a long way since her mum handed out those collection tins in the coffee shops 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>As Australia\u2019s most successful swimmer at the Worlds in Fukuoka last year,\u00a0<strong>Mollie O\u00a0<\/strong>walked away with a whopping payday of $A253,250 (~$172,463 U.S.).<\/p>\n<p>Claiming $A142,000 for her medal haul of five gold and a silver and four world records from the World Aquatics payment scheme&#8230;and with Australia\u2019s generous Gina Rinehart Patron\u2019s Funding Medal Scheme, the girl from St Peters Western added a further $A111,250 to her bank account.<\/p>\n<p>It was a massive and deserved payday for Australia\u2019s brightest new swim star as Paris awaits. Her next major goal will be adding her name to a who\u2019s who of Olympic champions in the 100 and 200 meter freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Gold in the 100 freestyle would see O\u2019Callaghan join other fellow Australians to win the blue-ribbon event:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fanny Durack<\/strong>, the first woman to win Olympic gold in the pool (1912);<\/li>\n<li>The legendary <strong>Dawn Fraser<\/strong> (1956,1960,1964);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jodie Henry<\/strong> (2004); and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> (2020).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And in the 200:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shane Gould<\/strong>, a remarkable 16-year-old schoolgirl who was the first Aussie to win the women\u2019s 200 freestyle (1972);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Susie O\u2019Neill<\/strong> (2000); and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> (2020).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certainly, greatness awaits Mollie O, the kid from working-class Queensland who just loves to swim&#8230;<em>faster than anyone else<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><a
