World Championships: Marrit Steenbergen Lowers Dutch Record, Holds off Haughey in 100 Free<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The women’s 100 freestyle had plenty of firepower heading into the finals, led by an Olympic medalist and a newly crowned Dutch national record holder, not to mention the US’s most versatile swimmer.<\/p>\n

The gold medal went to the Dutch record holder – in a new record – as Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> won the gold medal in 52.26, lowering her national record from the semifinals.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey<\/strong>, the Olympic silver medalist in this event, finished second in 52.56.<\/p>\n

Steenbergen was fourth at the turn but threw down a 26.96 final split – the only one in the field to break 27 on the back half.<\/p>\n

Haughey, who turned first at 24.87, was just behind.<\/p>\n

Day 6 Results<\/a><\/p>\n

Haughey won the gold medal in the 200 freestyle earlier at the World Championships in Doha.<\/p>\n

The bronze medal went to Australia’s Shayna Jack<\/strong>, who finished in 52.83.<\/p>\n

USA’s do-everything Kate Douglass<\/strong> took fourth in 53.02 in the first of her double on Day 6 of the World Championships.<\/p>\n

Fifth place went to Great Britain’s Anna Hopkin<\/strong> (53.09), followed by Brazil’s Stephanie Balduccini<\/strong> (54.05), Poland’s Kornelia Fiedkiewicz<\/strong> (54.06) and Czech Republic’s Barbora Seemanova<\/strong> (54.64).<\/p>\n
