Photo Courtesy Delly Carr (Swimming Australia).<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All that in the first five days of this meet at the Aspire Dome and with three days left to swim and the 50m butterfly and 4x100m medley relay still to come don\u2019t be surprised if this quiet achiever on the Dolphins Swim Team adds to her already heavy medal collection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former Western Australian, who in 2016 at age 20, qualified for the final of the 200m butterfly at her first Olympics in Rio, made her debut for Australia at just 16 at the 2012 World Short Course Championships in Istanbul, where she won silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throssell, who was coached by <strong>Matt Magee<\/strong> in WA and <strong>Mick Palfrey<\/strong> in WA and then on Sunshine Coach (QLD) has landed into Australia&#8217;s champion club, the Brisbane-based St Peters Western (SPW) squad under super coach <strong>Dean Boxall<\/strong> where she has revelled over the past two years in the competitive, hard-working atmosphere of one of the world\u2019s premier programs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview for <em>Swimming World Magazine<\/em> after last year\u2019s World Championships in Fukuoka, Boxall spoke highly of Throssell after his all-girl SPW team of <strong>Ariane Titmus, Shayna Jack, Mollie O\u2019Callaghan <\/strong>and Throssell charged to 4x200m freestyle gold, setting a new world record to boot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boxall saying: \u201cBri Throssell is the unsung hero (of this SPW group and of the Australian Swim Team).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBri is just there\u2026and she has always been there\u2026for 12 years and now she (is) in a program that works really hard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe said to me she had never been more nervous in her life than in Fukuoka\u2019 before the 4&#215;200\u2019 and that\u2019s because of the conversation (we had) \u2026.because conversations change mindsets\u2026.she was 27 years old (then)\u2026.she\u2019s a swimmer who keeps trying to push and finding a way to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the perfect summation of Throssell who felt like she\u2019d won gold with her bronze medal-winning individual swim in that 200m freestyle behind <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> (Hong Kong) and <strong>Erika Fairweather<\/strong> (New Zealand) \u2013 her first individual medal from six campaigns and an agonising close-up fourth-placed finish in the 100m butterfly here \u2013 beaten by 0.03!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m just really proud,\u201d said Throssell.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_578249\" style=\"width: 654px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-578249\" data-attachment-id=\"578249\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-doha-brianna-still-going-full-throssell-with-16-medals-from-six-world-championship-campaigns\/brianna-throssell-smile-photo-courtesy-delly-carr-swimming-australia\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Brianna-Throssell-smile-Photo-Courtesy-Delly-Carr-Swimming-Australia.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1113,1001\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Brianna Throssell smile Photo Courtesy Delly Carr (Swimming Australia).\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;HAPPY CAMPER: Brianna Throssell can&#8217;t hide herb joy in Doha. Photo Courtesy Delly Carr (Swimming Australia)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing 28 \u2026 I want to give hope to the people who are a little bit older, and this shows perseverance pays off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m really overwhelmed to be honest and \u2026 freestyle is never something I thought I\u2019d be racing internationally and to be on the podium, is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it is a path that Australia\u2019s most astute coaches always knew Throssell could travel down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two-time Olympic head coach, <strong>Leigh Nugent,<\/strong> wearing one of his many hats as former WA Head Coach and Technical Lead for Swimming Australia, said of Throssell in 2015 that the rising teenager was certainly capable of winning medals at international level in the near future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nugent had been conducting a coaching tour of WA\u2019s Great Southern Region to give advice to swimmers and coaches before watching a <strong>Matt Magee<\/strong>-led session at Perth City Swimming Club, where Throssell (18 at the time) was training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nugent revealed he had been monitoring Throssell&#8217;s progress since first seeing her swim as an 11-year-old at the South Australian State championships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;She took my eye right from the start,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Just the way that she swam, she raced. She was an athletic young girl,\u201d remembered Nugent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I have been involved with her development all the way along. For Bri, international exposure is really important now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Hopefully she can be successful in gaining selection at the world championships (in Russia in 2015).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;That competition prior to the Olympics is just the best experience you can get.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wise words that have continued to reap rewards for Throssell who is now thriving in the SPW environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth noting that Australia\u2019s bronze medal winning 4x200m freestyle relay team last night were once again all swimmers from Dean Boxall\u2019s SPW squad with <strong>Shayna Jack, Abbey Harkin<\/strong> and <strong>Kiah Melverton <\/strong>joining Throssell and 17-year-old rising star Jaclyn Barclay (who swam the heats) and was also in the 100m backstroke final.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in what has been another successful campaign for Boxall\u2019s group (even without the likes of World and Olympic golden girls <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> and <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong>), <strong>Elijah Winnington<\/strong> showed all of his fighting spirit too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2022 world champion over 400m freestyle, adding silver in the 800m freestyle to his silver in the 400m from night one, after leading for the first 10 laps before being reeled in by Italian <strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong> and then Ireland\u2019s <strong>Daniel Wiffen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winnington dropped back to third on the final turn before surging for silver, and a big personal best of 7:42.95 behind Wiffen (7:40.94) with World and Olympic champion Paltrinieri (7:42.98) the bronze.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saying he had looked across and saw Paltrinieri\u2019s feet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI thought I have to lift\u2026.I was actually having a lot of fun (out there) because I usually don\u2019t race these guys and I think that was a benefit to me as I didn\u2019t really have pressure on myself.
