Comeback<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australian Report Claims Banned Chinese Olympic Champion Sun Yang Planning Comeback<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports in Australia claim that China\u2019s banned Olympic champion <strong>Sun Yang<\/strong> could well be planning a comeback for the Paris Games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>News Corp<\/em> papers have published today that 32-year-old Sun \u201cis still secretly preparing for a shock return to the Chinese team at this year\u2019s Paris Olympics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report claims that Sun is continuing to train every day in his homeland and sources have confirmed to <em>News Corp<\/em> that he remains on China\u2019s registered anti-doping testing pool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s a sure sign he\u2019s still planning a comeback because there\u2019s no other reason why anyone would remain on the registered list because it requires them to provide specific details about their daily whereabouts and undertake random, unannounced blood and urine tests,\u201d wrote <em>News Corp <\/em>chief Olympic correspondent Julian Linden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs soon as athletes retire, they immediately take themselves off the anti-doping registry so they can live normal lives, but it means they are ineligible to compete.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSun is already banned from racing because he is currently serving a four-year suspension for tampering with his samples before they could be checked for performance-enhancing substances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut his ban \u2013 which was\u00a0reduced from eight years \u00a0expires on May 27 \u2013 exactly two months before the opening day of swimming at the Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Chinese Olympic trials are scheduled to take place in April, which would seem to rule Sun out of contention, but the Chinese Swimming Association can use their discretionary powers to pick him as long as he posts a qualifying time before June 23.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Sun did make it back, the report suggested he would likely race in the 400 metres freestyle, which also happens to be the first event on the swimming program in Paris.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sun won the 400m gold at the 2012 London Olympics but was beaten at Rio in 2016 by recently retired <strong>Mack Horton,<\/strong> who famously protested at Sun\u2019s Photo Courtesy: Andrea Staccioli \/ Deepbluemedia \/ Insidefoto<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Sun does make it to Paris, he might have two Aussies to contend with <strong>Sam Short, <\/strong>the reigning world champion, and <strong>Elijah Winnington<\/strong>, the 2022 world champion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Short opting out of this year\u2019s World\u2019s meet which kick-starts in Doha today, Australia\u2019s hopes lie with Winnington, who has arrived from a Thailand training camp with coach <strong>Dean Boxall<\/strong> and other members of his squad, including World Championship silver medallist <strong>Shayna Jack.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The men\u2019s 400m will be the feature event on the opening day with Winnington up against \u00a0Tokyo Olympic champion Tunisia\u2019s <strong>Ahmed Hafnaoui,<\/strong> hyped Irishman <strong>Daniel Wiffen<\/strong>, who broke <strong>Grant Hackett\u2019s<\/strong> 800m short course world record in December and Germany\u2019s <strong>Lukas Martens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile Jack \u2013 who will contest the 50, 100 and 200m freestyle in Doha, will be in action on Day One in Australia\u2019s 4x100m freestyle relay \u2013reigning world record holders, Olympic champions and recent World champions in Gwangju (2019), Budapest (2022) and Fukuoka (2023).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia\u2019s Head coach\u00a0<strong>Rohan Taylor<\/strong>\u00a0said his 15-strong group, which is minus the likes of the world\u2019s premier backstroker <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> but includes backstroke rookies <strong>Jaclyn Barclay<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Iona Anderson<\/strong>, is ready to race.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou will see some fast swimming.
