{"id":577063,"date":"2024-02-04T21:46:53","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T04:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=577063"},"modified":"2024-02-04T21:46:53","modified_gmt":"2024-02-05T04:46:53","slug":"world-championship-water-polo-u-s-tops-netherlands-in-battle-of-champs-to-open-womens-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championship-water-polo-u-s-tops-netherlands-in-battle-of-champs-to-open-womens-play\/","title":{"rendered":"World Championship Water Polo: U.S. Tops Netherlands in Battle of Champs to Open Women\u2019s Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>World Championship Water Polo: U.S. Tops Netherlands in Battle of Champs to Open Women\u2019s Play<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s water polo tournament at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships got off to a marquee start Sunday, with reigning Olympic champion United States topping World Champion Netherlands, 10-8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ashleigh Johnson<\/strong> made eight saves, while <strong>Tara Prentice, Rachel Fattal<\/strong> and <strong>Jordan Raney<\/strong> scored twice each to get the tournament in Doha off to a flying start.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/total-waterpolo.com\/world-championships-doha-2024-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Total Water Polo: World Championship Water Polo Women&#8217;s Tournament Hub<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/how-to-watch-2024-world-aquatics-championships-to-be-covered-live-on-peacock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Watch: 2024 World Aquatics Championships to be Covered Live on Peacock<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fattal helped build a 5-2 lead early in the second quarter, and <strong>Maggie Steffens\u2019<\/strong> goal with 1:53 left in the third quarter made it 9-6, enough of a cushion to withstand the late push by the Dutch. <strong>Simone van de Kraats<\/strong> got Netherlands within 10-8 with 2:41 to play, but the U.S. turned up the defense to get the result across the line.<\/p>\n<p>Van de Kraats scored four goals, but the U.S. muzzled the high-powered trio of <strong>Sabrina van der Sloot, Brigitte Sleeking<\/strong> and <strong>Lieke Rogge,<\/strong> who combined to shoot 2-for-16. <strong>Kitty-Lynn Joustra<\/strong> added two goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laura Aarts<\/strong> stopped eight shots for the newly crowned European champ.<\/p>\n<p>The game of the day wasn\u2019t quite as highly touted, with Kazakhstan beating Brazil, 16-15, in the penalty shootout. <strong>Anna Novikova\u2019s<\/strong> fourth goal of the game tied it with 57 seconds left, then seven rounds of the shootout were required until <strong>Viktoriya Kaplun<\/strong> won it. <strong>Jeniffer Cavalvante<\/strong> scored four times for Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Spain handled China, 18-5, with a <strong>Paula Crespi<\/strong> hat trick leading seven multi-goal scorers. <strong>Martina Terre<\/strong> stopped 10 shots.<\/p>\n<p>Greece steadily pulled away for an 11-7 win over France. <strong>Eleftheria Plevritou<\/strong> scored a hat trick, and <strong>Erini Ninou and Vasiliki Plevitrou<\/strong> scored twice apiece.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary poured on eight goals in the fourth quarter to fatten the scoreline in a 19-8 win over New Zealand. <strong>Greta Gurisatti<\/strong> potted six goals. <strong>Rita Keszthelyi<\/strong> fired home five.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh off a solid result at Euros, Great Britain couldn\u2019t keep pace with Italy in a 22-10 loss. They were outscored 12-4 in the middle two quarters. <strong>Guiditta Galardi<\/strong> and <strong>Roberta Bianconi<\/strong> scored four goals each. <strong>Sofia Giustini<\/strong> and <strong>Agnese Cocchiere<\/strong> supplied hat tricks.<\/p>\n<p>Australia routed Singapore, 32-1, behind five goals from <strong>Keesja Gofers<\/strong> and four each from <strong>Abby Anders<\/strong> and <strong>Bridget Leeson-Smith.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Canada pitched a first-half shutout on the way to a 24-2 decision over South Africa. <strong>Jessica Gaudreaut<\/strong> and <strong>Clara Vulpisi<\/strong> combined for eight saves. <strong>Emma Wright<\/strong> was 5-for-5 shooting, and <strong>Elyse Lemay-Lavoie<\/strong> added five
