Last season, Carmel won every event except the 100 freestyle at the state championship meet and earned 15 individual top-three finishes (out of a maximum 24 in eight individual events). And Carmel won all three relays in dominant fashion, two of them with national records.<\/p>\n<p>Carmel dominated not only its competition in Indiana but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/carmel-high-in-a-class-of-its-own-girls-and-boys-sweep-swimming-world-mythical-team-titles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the mythical national rankings<\/a>, scoring 235 points <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/girls-national-high-school-mythical-championships-how-carmel-dominated-the-country-in-2023-full-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to beat runnerup (and defending mythical champion) Santa Margarita Catholic (Calif.) by a whopping 70.5 points<\/a>. The second-place public school, Brookfield East (Wis.), was 97 points behind Carmel.<\/p>\n<p>And while Carmel graduated key contributors such as\u00a0<strong>Berit Berglund<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Meghan Christman<\/strong>, both members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/carmel-shatters-national-high-school-record-in-200-medley-relay-breaks-pair-of-barriers-during-iconic-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a national-record-setting 200 medley relay<\/a>, every other star from last year&#8217;s team returns. That includes junior <strong>Alex Shackell<\/strong>, who led the national rankings in the 100 butterfly, as\u00a0 well as junior <strong>Lynsey Bowen<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Molly Sweeney<\/strong>, who both had multiple top-eight national swims.<\/p>\n<p>Since the last high school season, Shackell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/alex-shackell-breaks-through-to-major-level-coach-credits-consistent-dedication-to-excellence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has emerged as a bona fide star<\/a>, qualifying for the World Championships team last year in the 200-meter freestyle as a relay swimmer and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/american-teenagers-erin-gemmell-and-alex-shackell-help-secure-silver-in-promising-paris-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anchoring the U.S. women to silver in the 800 free relay in Fukuoka<\/a>. Shackell also came close to qualifying for the Worlds team individually in the 200 fly.<\/p>\n<p>Back in yards this high school season, Shackell could chase the national high school record in the 100 fly. That mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/claire-curzan-breaks-100-butterfly-american-record-and-100-back-high-school-record-at-north-carolina-high-school-state-meet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">belongs to\u00a0<strong>Claire Curzan<\/strong> at 49.24<\/a>, an American record at the time she swam the mark two years ago, while Shackell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/speedo-east-winter-juniors-alex-shackell-lowers-100-fly-meet-record-in-golden-double\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swam a time of 49.49 to win the event at U.S. Junior Nationals East in December, ranking her ninth all-time<\/a>. Torri Huske holds the public-school national record at 49.95. Shackell will also pursue the 100 backstroke at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihsaa.org\/sports\/girls\/swimming-diving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high school state meet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At their sectional meet, the Greyhounds won every individual swimming event.
