{"id":576895,"date":"2024-02-02T22:33:35","date_gmt":"2024-02-03T05:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=576895"},"modified":"2024-02-02T22:33:35","modified_gmt":"2024-02-03T05:33:35","slug":"minnesota-leads-big-ten-rivals-after-day-one-of-purdue-quad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/minnesota-leads-big-ten-rivals-after-day-one-of-purdue-quad\/","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota Leads Big Ten Rivals After Day One of Purdue Quad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Minnesota Leads Big Ten Rivals After Day One of Purdue Quad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three Big Ten swim teams have traveled to West Lafayette, Ind., this weekend for a two-day quad meet, and in both the women&#8217;s and men&#8217;s competition, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have built early leads on Purdue, Northwestern and Iowa (women only).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s Team Scores:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minnesota 150, Iowa 55<\/li>\n<li>Minnesota 121, Purdue 84<\/li>\n<li>Purdue 143, Iowa 62<\/li>\n<li>Minnesota 139, Northwestern 63<\/li>\n<li>Northwestern 105, Iowa 97<\/li>\n<li>Purdue 122, Northwestern 80<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Men&#8217;s Team Scores:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minnesota 104, Purdue 101<\/li>\n<li>Minnesota 114, Northwestern 91<\/li>\n<li>Purdue 117, Northwestern 88<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Golden Gopher women edged out Northwestern by 21-hundredths to win the 200 medley relay.\u00a0<strong>Paula Rodriguez Rivero<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ava Goodno<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Morgan Thomas<\/strong> were almost a half-second back before\u00a0<strong>Hannah Cornish<\/strong> anchored in a blazing 21.91 to give Minnesota a 1:38.60 victory.\u00a0<strong>Eliot Kennedy<\/strong> followed with a dominant win in the 1000 freestyle (9:40.52), and Rodriguez Rivero was the winner in the 100 backstroke (52.88).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Megan Van Berkom<\/strong> won the 200 butterfly (1:56.77) as well as the 200 IM (1:58.02), and she anchored the victorious Minnesota 800 free relay team, with Thomas, <strong>Mina Kaljevic<\/strong> and<strong>Anja Kaljevic<\/strong> swimming the first three legs on the way to a final time of 7:11.61.<\/p>\n<p>Northwestern&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ayla Spitz<\/strong> swam a swift mark of 1:44.96 to win the 200 free, and teammate <strong>Lindsay Ervin<\/strong> posted a time of 22.70 to win the 50 free. Iowa&#8217;s <strong>Olivia Swalley<\/strong> finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.01). Purdue&#8217;s <strong>Sophia McAfee<\/strong> dominated diving, winning on 3-meter (349.05) and 1-meter (298.10).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More college swimming news<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The men&#8217;s team from Minnesota got rolling with\u00a0<strong>Davide Harabagiu<\/strong> winning the 100 back (47.06) before\u00a0<strong>Kaiser Neverman<\/strong> swam a mark of 1:42.66 to win the 200 fly.\u00a0<strong>YuTong Wang<\/strong> finished first in 1-meter diving (356.05). Neverman, <strong>Bar Soloveychik<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tyler Hansen<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Alberto Hernandez Garcia<\/strong> earned a commanding victory in the 800 free relay, touching in 6:28.17.<\/p>\n<p>Purdue&#8217;s men got off to a hot start with\u00a0<strong>Brady Samuels<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Andrew Witty<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Charlie King<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Idris Muhammad<\/strong> leading the way in the 200 medley relay at 1:24.98. Samuels also won the 200 free (1:39.90) and 50 free (19.99).
