{"id":576587,"date":"2024-01-27T15:05:59","date_gmt":"2024-01-27T22:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=576587"},"modified":"2024-01-27T15:05:59","modified_gmt":"2024-01-27T22:05:59","slug":"emma-sticklen-doubles-amid-strong-texas-performances-at-duke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/emma-sticklen-doubles-amid-strong-texas-performances-at-duke\/","title":{"rendered":"Emma Sticklen Doubles Amid Strong Texas Performances at Duke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Emma Sticklen Doubles Amid Strong Texas Performances at Duke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/17-pool-records-fall-in-raleigh-onslaught-as-texas-women-nc-state-men-roll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an exciting dual meet between Texas and NC State in Raleigh Friday afternoon<\/a>, the Longhorns made the short trip to Durham to swim in an unscored competition against Duke, with the Blue Devils also coming off a meet Friday, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/north-carolina-women-edge-duke-on-final-relay-to-complete-sweep-in-rivalry-meet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they hosted fierce rival North Carolina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The meet began with a tight battle in the 200 medley relay, but the Texas team of <strong>Emma Kern<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Anna Elendt<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Emma Sticklen<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Ava Longi<\/strong> got the better of Duke&#8217;s top team and the Longhorns&#8217; own B squad by just three tenths, finishing in 1:27.02. <strong>Kaelyn Gridley<\/strong> propelled Duke in front of Texas with a 26.91 breaststroke leg before Sticklen took the lead for Texas with a 22.90 butterfly split. Longi finished in 21.75, and she needed that speed as Duke&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tatum Wall<\/strong> split 21.45. The Texas B squad, leaders for most of the race, finished two hundredths behind Duke in third.<\/p>\n<p>The Longhorns&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong> won the 1000 freestyle in 9:41.59, and teammate <strong>Kelly Pash<\/strong> topped the 100 backstroke (52.60) and 500 free (4:45.37). Sticklen won the 50 free (22.37) and 200 IM (1:56.58), and <strong>Erin Gemmell<\/strong> came in first in the 100 free (48.70). <strong>Bridget O&#8217;Neil<\/strong> finished first in 3-meter diving (355.43). Finally, the Texas team of\u00a0<strong>Emma Davidson<\/strong>, Pash,\u00a0<strong>Olivia Bray<\/strong> and Longi won the 200 free relay in 1:28.82.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More college swimming news<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/texassports.com\/news\/2024\/1\/27\/womens-swimming-and-diving-no-2-swim-dive-wraps-successful-road-trip-at-no-17-duke.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas women&#8217;s recap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/texassports.com\/news\/2024\/1\/27\/mens-swimming-and-diving-no-9-swim-dive-completes-competition-against-duke.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas men&#8217;s recap<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Duke, Wall got the win in the 200 free (1:47.30), and Gridley broke 1:00 in the 100 breast with her winning time of 59.48.\u00a0<strong>Martina Peroni<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>then blasted a swift mark of 1:54.01 in the 200 fly to move into the national top-10 in the event.\u00a0<strong>Molly Donlan<\/strong> paced the Blue Devils in the 200 back (1:55.38).\u00a0<strong>Aleyna Ozkan<\/strong> secured first place n the 100 fly in 53.00.\u00a0<strong>Margo Omeara\u00a0<\/strong>won 1-meter diving (321.45).<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side, Texas opened with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay, with\u00a0<strong>Alec Filipovic<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Brayden Taivassalo<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sam Artmann<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Cole Crane<\/strong> finishing first in 1:27.06.\u00a0<strong>Nate Germonprez<\/strong> swam a time of 1:34.98 to pace Texas in the 200 free, and Taivassalo topped the 100 breast (54.48) before Crane won the 200 fly (1:46.32).\u00a0<strong>Luke Hobson<\/strong> swam a swift 19.69 to win the 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth-year swimmer <strong>Jake Foster<\/strong> impressed in the 200 breast with his time of 1:53.05, and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Branon Jr.\u00a0<\/strong>took first in the 100 fly (48.18). The final individual event of the day, the 200 IM, went to <strong>Will Scholtz<\/strong> in 1:47.90. <strong>Sasha Lyubavskiy<\/strong> was the only swimmer to race the 1000 free (9:15.55). The Longhorns&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Nick Harris<\/strong> won 1-meter diving (367.65) while teammate\u00a0<strong>Manny Borowski<\/strong> finished first on 3-meter (419.25).
