BRAZIL&#8217;s Bruno Fratus certainly proved to be disappointed after bashing the field in the men&#8217;s 50-meter free at the Arena Grand Prix in Santa Clara.<\/p>\n<p>Fratus, who ranks second in the world with a 21.45, had to swim basically by himself after California&#8217;s Nathan Adrian scratched this morning. Adrian is the fifth-ranked swimmer in the world with a 21.66 and the two were destined for an epic head-to-head. But, Adrian, citing a need for a break after swimming nine 50s in just nine days due to his entrance in the Mare Nostrum tour, pulled out of the event this morning.<\/p>\n<p>That left Fratus with a chance to post a half-a-second win against a world-class field as he clocked a 22.03. California&#8217;s Anthony Ervin, an Olympic gold medalist in his own right, took second in 2.558 with NYAC&#8217;s Josh Schneider placing third in 22.63.<\/p>\n<p>Nitro&#8217;s Matt Ellis (22.71), Brad Tandy (22.79), Paul Powers (22.89), NYAC&#8217;s Adam Brown (23.05), Stanford&#8217;s Alex Coville (23.08) and John Murray (23.10) also swam in the championships heat.<\/p>\n<p>Club Wolverine&#8217;s George Bovell took home the B final title in 22.71 with Redlands&#8217; Joey Hale taking second in 23.01. Wyatt Ubellacker clinched third in 23.19.<\/p>\n<p>Santo Condorelli (23.20), Tucson Ford&#8217;s Matt Grevers (23.27), Hong Kong&#8217;s Geoff Cheah (23.31), California&#8217;s Seth Stubblefield (23.31), Auburn&#8217;s James Disney-May (23.31) and California&#8217;s Tyler Messerschmidt (23.43) also vied for the consolation title.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arena Grand Prix &#8211; Santa Clara editorial coverage is proudly sponsored by Arena USA.
