{"id":576263,"date":"2024-01-19T10:23:26","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T17:23:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=576263"},"modified":"2024-01-19T10:23:26","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T17:23:26","slug":"summer-mcintosh-named-canadas-swimmer-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/summer-mcintosh-named-canadas-swimmer-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer McIntosh Named Canada\u2019s Swimmer of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Summer McIntosh Named Canada\u2019s Swimmer of the Year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> on Thursday was named Canada\u2019s Female Swimmer of the Year and Junior Female Swimmer of the Year for 2023 by Swimming Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old set world records at Bell Canadian Trials to start the year, then became the first Canadian swimmer to win multiple world championships in back-to-back years. She won the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. She added bronze medals in the 200 freestyle and 400 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>McIntosh set the world record in the 400 IM. She\u2019s also the world junior record holder in the 200 fly. She is the owner of five Canadian senior records and five world junior records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s done what no Canadian athlete has done before,\u201d Swimming Canada\u2019s high performance director and national coach <strong>John Atkinson<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.ca\/en\/news\/2024\/01\/18\/mcintosh-caps-off-record-breaking-year-with-swimming-canada-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a press release<\/a>. \u201cWhen you think of all the great athletes that we\u2019ve had, and you see what Summer has accomplished at 17, it\u2019s a testament not only to her but to her coach and to her parents who all work together as a team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McIntosh was named <em>Swimming World&#8217;s<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/summer-mcintosh-secures-americas-female-swimmer-of-the-year-recognition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Americas Swimmer of the Year in 2023<\/a>. Her 400 IM record was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-record-of-the-year-female-summer-mcintosh-overcomes-katinka-hosszu-mark-in-400-im\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">female world record performance of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>McIntosh began her career at Etobicoke Swim Club before transitioning last year to Sarasota Sharks in Florida. She qualified for her first Olympics at age 14 at the Tokyo Games. She was fourth in the 400 free and fourth in the 800 free relay, the latter in a Canadian record, in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>In Fukuoka, McIntosh bounced back from a minor blip, finishing fourth against a deep field in the 400 freestyle in which Australia\u2019s Ariarne Titmus took down McIntosh\u2019s world record. She would recover to collect four medals at the meet, one of its best performers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was definitely motivating,\u201d McIntosh said then. \u201cI knew it was going to be mentally tough but I try to turn everything that goes wrong into motivation somehow.
