University of Minnesota Defeats Division II Tampa in First 2024 Dual Meet<\/strong><\/p>\n

Collegiate swimming competition returned in earnest Friday, and with numerous top teams seeking warmer climates during the holiday break from school, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers were in Florida to face Division II power University of Tampa and cruised to wins. Minnesota’s women went up 209 to 52 while the men won 183 to 89.<\/p>\n

For Minnesota, freshmen Morgan Thomas<\/strong> and\u00a0Jade Roghair<\/strong> each won a pair of freestyle events, with Thomas wining the 50 free (23.62) and 100 free (50.95) while Roghair shining in the 200 free (1:53.79) and 500 free (5:03.25). In the longest freestyle event,\u00a0Katie McCarthy<\/strong> topped the 1000 (10:09.75). The other double winner for Minnesota was veteran\u00a0Megan Van Berkom<\/strong>, who finished just five hundredths behind McCarthy in the 500 free before cruising in the 200 butterfly (2:01.60) and 400 IM (4:21.67).<\/p>\n

Minnesota’s\u00a0Ava Yablonski<\/strong> won the 100 backstroke (56.93), and\u00a0Ava Goodno<\/strong> won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.17). Other winners for the Gopher women included\u00a0Faith Johnson<\/strong> (200 back, 2:03.70),\u00a0Ava Gustafson<\/strong> (200 breast, 2:24.00) and Claire Reinke<\/strong> (100 fly, 56.22).\u00a0Paula Rodriguez Rivero<\/strong>, Goodno, Thomas and\u00a0Hannah Cornish<\/strong>went 1:45.33 for a 200 medley relay win while Minnesota’s Cornish, Thomas,\u00a0Mina Kalevic\u00a0<\/strong>and Yablonski beat the field by almost seven seconds in the 400 free relay, clocking 3:29.66.<\/p>\n
