{"id":575218,"date":"2023-12-23T08:34:13","date_gmt":"2023-12-23T15:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=575218"},"modified":"2023-12-23T08:34:13","modified_gmt":"2023-12-23T15:34:13","slug":"u-s-age-group-performance-of-the-year-thomas-heilman-reaches-big-time-in-worlds-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-age-group-performance-of-the-year-thomas-heilman-reaches-big-time-in-worlds-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Age Group Performance of the Year: Thomas Heilman Reaches Big-Time in Worlds Debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>U.S. Age Group Performance of the Year: Thomas Heilman Reaches Big-Time in Worlds Debut<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>High-school aged swimmers played a key role for the United States at this year&#8217;s World Championships, with five such young swimmers earning spots in individual events in Fukuoka.\u00a0<strong>Katie Grimes<\/strong> won a pair of individual medals while\u00a0<strong>Bella Sims<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Claire Weinstein<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Jillian Cox <\/strong>were the other women in individual swims.\u00a0<strong>Erin Gemmell<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Alex Shackell<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/american-teenagers-erin-gemmell-and-alex-shackell-help-secure-silver-in-promising-paris-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">played key roles helping the Americans win silver in the 800 freestyle relay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All impressive but not quite as stunning as what\u00a0<strong>Thomas Heilman<\/strong> pulled off this year in his jump from National-Age-Group record-breaker to elite international performer. His performances from age 14 through 16 suggested a bright future, but that came much quicker than expected as Heilman blasted his way into a pair of championship finals at U.S. Nationals \u2014 and he ended up making the team in both events.<\/p>\n<p>Heilman arrived at U.S. Nationals with a 200 fly best time of 1:56.52, only to get down to 1:55.11 in prelims. A few hours later, Heilman swam in third place for most of the finals race behind\u00a0<strong>Carson Foster<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Trenton Julian<\/strong>, but on the final length, he overtook Julian and nearly chased down Foster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-nationals-carson-foster-holds-on-for-200-fly-title-thomas-heilman-breaks-phelps-nag-record-to-secure-worlds-spot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coming in only two tenths behind to earn a ticket to Fukuoka<\/a>. Heilman&#8217;s mark of 1:54.54 was a best time, and he surpassed the NAG record that <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>set in 2001 when he won his first career world title.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, Heilman pulled off an even-more unexpected qualification in the 100 fly, dropping from 51.98 to 51.78 in prelims, tying for fifth in qualifying, before swimming a mark of 51.19 in finals to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/thomas-heilman-shatters-another-nag-record-books-second-swim-at-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earn a second swim at Worlds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And in his first appearance at a senior-level international competition, Heilman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-thomas-heilman-flourishing-on-global-stage-and-just-getting-started\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thrived<\/a>. He snuck into the 200 fly final as the seventh seed, and in the final, he stayed close enough to the field to make a run down the stretch. In fifth place at the final turn, Heilman split 29.70 on the way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/thomas-heilman-crushes-national-age-group-record-in-fourth-place-200-fly-finish-at-worlds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a final time of 1:53.82, tying with\u00a0<strong>Ilya Kharun<\/strong> for fourth place<\/a> and coming just 16-hundredths short of the podium.<\/p>\n<p>Heilman finished just three hundredths off <strong>Kristof Milak&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>world junior record (1:53.79), and he will have two more years to take down that mark. After dropping a whopping 2.70 seconds in 2023, we like Heilman&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/after-worlds-debut-teenager-thomas-heilman-teeming-with-potential-for-olympic-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chances of overcoming that tiny margin<\/a> to claim the record for his own in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Heilman, who will turn 17 in February, did not advance out of the 100 fly prelims at Worlds, but later earned a gold medal by virtue of his prelims leg on the U.S. men&#8217;s 400 medley relay.
