{"id":574932,"date":"2023-12-14T22:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T05:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=574932"},"modified":"2023-12-14T22:30:00","modified_gmt":"2023-12-15T05:30:00","slug":"chinese-championships-day-5-ye-shiwen-wins-400-im","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chinese-championships-day-5-ye-shiwen-wins-400-im\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Championships, Day 5: Ye Shiwen Wins 400 IM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chinese Championships, Day 5: Ye Shiwen Wins 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ye Shiwen<\/strong> rolled back the clock to win the 400 individual medley at the Chinese Swimming Championships Thursday, the fifth day of the meet in Jinan.<\/p>\n<p>Her time of 4:38.58 dropped her under 4:40 for the first time in 2021 and gave her a five-second win over<strong> Yin Jiahe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ye has gotten away from the event where she first made her name, doing the IM double at age 16 at the London Olympics in 2012. The one-time world record holder last swam the 400 IM internationally at the 2019 World Championships, when she won a silver medal in 4:32.07. She finished a distant 27th at the Rio Olympics in the 400 IM and didn\u2019t qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zhang-yufei-qin-haiyang-look-sharp-at-chinese-champs-qualify-for-world-titles-in-doha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day One Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/xu-jiayu-zhang-yufei-add-titles-at-chinese-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day Two Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/qin-haiyang-scares-asian-record-in-50-breaststroke-at-chinese-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day Three Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chinese-championships-day-4-chen-luying-edges-zhang-yufei-in-epic-200-fly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day Four Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She won silver in the 200 IM and gold in the 200 breast at the Asian Games last summer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehangzhou.gov.cn\/2023-09\/26\/c_286886.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in her hometown of Guangzhou<\/a>. As she\u2019s focused on the shorter medley, she\u2019s been surpassed by younger athletes like <strong>Yu Yiting<\/strong> and <strong>Ge Chutong<\/strong> in the 400 IM. (Yu finished ninth in prelims Thursday.)<\/p>\n<p>Ye went 4:43.85 at the Chinese Spring Championships in April and 4:39.24 in the national summer champs in 2021. She was 4:43.93 in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cheng Yujie<\/strong> led the way in an exciting women\u2019s 100 freestyle, winning in 53.57. <strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong> ended up third in 54.01, with <strong>Yang Junxuan<\/strong> in between them, further bolstering their relay medal hopes at the next Olympics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tan Qianting<\/strong> won the women\u2019s 200 breast in 2:26.12, more than a second clear of <strong>Zheng Muyan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Qin Haiyang,<\/strong> the triple world champion, added another national title in the men\u2019s 200 breast, clocking in at 2:09.45. Hong Kong\u2019s <strong>Adam Mak<\/strong> <strong>Sai-Ting <\/strong>was second in 2:12.12, with <strong>Song Yifei<\/strong> third. Qin has already won the 50 break at this meet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wang Yutian<\/strong> led the way in the 200 back, where two swimmers broke two minutes. Wang hit the wall in 1;59.15.
