{"id":574877,"date":"2023-12-13T19:42:22","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T02:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=574877"},"modified":"2023-12-13T19:42:22","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T02:42:22","slug":"malaysias-khiew-hoe-yean-breaks-32-year-old-national-record-at-queensland-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/malaysias-khiew-hoe-yean-breaks-32-year-old-national-record-at-queensland-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia\u2019s Khiew Hoe Yean Breaks 32-Year-Old National Record at Queensland Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Malaysia\u2019s Khiew Hoe Yean Breaks 32-Year-Old National Record at Queensland Championships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malaysian distance swimmer <strong>Khiew Hoe Yean<\/strong> broke a 32-year-old national record in the men\u2019s 1,500 freestyle at the Queensland Championships this week.<\/p>\n<p>Hoe Yean went 15:21.92 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/liveresults.swimming.org.au\/QLD\/SQ2023-24\/2023STATECHAMPS\/231209F072.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,500 free on Sunday<\/a>. He finished second in the race, behind Australian <strong>Matt Galea.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old\u2019s time undercut the mark of 15:23.61 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/sport\/swimming\/2023\/12\/12\/swimmer-khiew-breaks-longest-standing-national-record-held-by-jeffrey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set in 1991<\/a> by <strong>Jeffrey Ong.<\/strong> That time came at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swimming_at_the_1991_Summer_Universiade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1991 World University Games<\/a> in Sheffield, England. It earned Ong a silver medal, behind <strong>Ian Wilson<\/strong> of Great Britain, in one of the most notable swimming achievements in that country\u2019s history. Ong was a two-time Olympian.<\/p>\n<p>Hoe Yean is hoping to become the work his way into that kind of international status. He holds the national records in the 400 free, 800 free, 200 back and 200 individual medley. He set the 800 free record at the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, last summer, finishing 29th. He was also 24th in the 1,500 free.<\/p>\n<p>He had set the 400 free mark at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, a feat which earned him 15th place.<\/p>\n<p>His time remains well short of the Olympic A cut in the 1,500 free, which is 15:00.99. The Olympic consideration time is 15:05.49.<\/p>\n<p>Hoe Yean is one of the country\u2019s big medal hopes on the international scene. He\u2019s won gold medal as the last two Southeast Asian Games, among 12 total medals at the last three editions of the regional championships.
