{"id":574875,"date":"2023-12-13T19:35:51","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T02:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=574875"},"modified":"2023-12-13T19:35:51","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T02:35:51","slug":"kliment-kolesnikov-cannot-accept-ioc-conditions-for-russias-paris-participation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kliment-kolesnikov-cannot-accept-ioc-conditions-for-russias-paris-participation\/","title":{"rendered":"Kliment Kolesnikov \u2018Cannot Accept\u2019 IOC Conditions for Russia\u2019s Paris Participation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kliment Kolesnikov \u2018Cannot Accept\u2019 IOC Conditions for Russia\u2019s Paris Participation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong> said this week that he \u201ccannot accept\u201d the conditions set forth last week by the International Olympic Committee for Russian and Belarussian athletes to compete as neutrals at the Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Both countries have been absent from international competition since Russia\u2019s 2022 invasion of neighbor Ukraine, which has continued with materiel support from Belarus. World Aquatics and European Aquatics have excluded the countries from World and European Championships since.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the IOC set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-caves-to-allow-russian-athletes-at-paris-olympics-under-strict-conditions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what it called \u201cstrict\u201d conditions for athletes to participate<\/a> as \u201cindividual neutral athletes,\u201d without flags, anthems or team aspects (presumably, for swimming, no relays.) To do so, athletes would have to qualify according to the conditions of the international federation (i.e. World Aquatics) and not \u201cactively support the war\u201d or be contracted to the military or national security agencies of either country.<\/p>\n<p>While Kolesnikov approved of the IOC\u2019s decision, he said in an interview with Russian outlet <em>Matchtv<\/em> that he would not vie to fit those criteria. His remarks were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/index.php\/articles\/1142918\/kolesnikov-not-accepting-ioc-2024-bid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first translated to English by Inside the Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is good that the IOC has taken this step in principle and has made a decision on admission,\u201d Kolesnikov said. \u201cAnother thing is that the conditions for the neutral status of World Aquatics remain the same. If you don&#8217;t agree with them, you don&#8217;t get the neutral status of World Aquatics. If you don&#8217;t get neutral status, you don&#8217;t qualify for the Olympic Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kolesnikov is one of the biggest names within the Russian program. He won silver in the 100 backstroke \u2013 behind countryman <strong>Evgeny Rylov<\/strong> \u2013 and bronze in the 100 freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics. The 23-year-old set the world record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-kliment-kolesnikov-sets-50-backstroke-wr-of-23-55-at-swim-cup-of-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the men\u2019s 50 backstroke in July<\/a> at a national meet. He also set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kliment-kolesnikov-lowers-50-backstroke-short-course-world-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the short-course record in that event<\/a> in 2022 during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/disappointment-opportunity-kliment-kolesnikov-taking-long-view-amid-tumultuous-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia\u2019s international sabbatical<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kolesnikov owns 10 medals (six gold) at European Long-Course Championships and 18 medals (13 gold) at European Short-Course Championships.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Russian state-owned news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/sports\/1607277?utm_source=google.com&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=google.com&amp;utm_referrer=google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TASS in April<\/a>, Kolesnikov conceded that the Olympics, \u201care still number one for fulfilling athletic ambitions,\u201d he\u2019s not planning to meet the conditions to make that happen in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can only speak for myself,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are guys who are willing to accept these conditions from the international federations and perform. I will be happy for them if they go to the Olympics.
