{"id":573808,"date":"2023-12-02T12:28:50","date_gmt":"2023-12-02T19:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=573808"},"modified":"2023-12-02T12:28:50","modified_gmt":"2023-12-02T19:28:50","slug":"american-claire-weinstein-wins-world-aquatics-open-water-cup-finale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/american-claire-weinstein-wins-world-aquatics-open-water-cup-finale\/","title":{"rendered":"American Claire Weinstein Wins World Aquatics Open Water Cup Finale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>American Claire Weinstein Wins World Aquatics Open Water Cup Finale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>American <strong>Claire Weinstein<\/strong> won the final installment of the 2023 World Aquatics Open Water Cup on Saturday in Funchal, Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>Weinstein led three Americans in the top five and win came ahead of a crowd of contenders for the season title, with Germany\u2019s <strong>Leonie Beck<\/strong> doing enough to edge out <strong>Sharon Van Rouwendaal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Domenico Acerenza<\/strong> of Italy won the men\u2019s race, while <strong>Kristof Rasovszky<\/strong> of Hungary did enough to secure the series title.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldaquatics.com\/competitions\/3071\/world-aquatics-open-water-swimming-world-cup-2023\/results?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Funchal World Cup Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldaquatics.com\/competitions\/3071\/world-aquatics-open-water-swimming-world-cup-2023\/rankings?scoringId=14398956-c69d-4df6-b15e-ddf3c77ed382&amp;eventCountry=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Aquatics World Cup Rankings<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Weinstein covered the 10-kilometer course in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 54.30 seconds. She went to the lead in the fifth lap of six and opened up a gap of more than a minute on the runner-up, <strong>Bettina Fabian<\/strong> of Hungary. Fabian touched in 1:58:07.50.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first major international win for Weinstein, a 16-year-old from New York who swims for Sandpipers of Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is only my second international open water race, so I just kind of wanted to go in and do my best,\u201d Weinstein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/news\/2023\/12\/02\/weinstein-wins-world-aquatics-open-water-world-cup---funchal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told USA Swimming<\/a>. \u201cSwimming in wavy water is definitely difficult for me; I\u2019m used to the pool, so I like it when it\u2019s flat. I just wanted to stay at the front of the pack and see how good I could do. I\u2019m not really that good at being in the back and moving up, so I just wanted to stay in front and hopefully hold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fabian was two seconds ahead of the crowd, with France\u2019s <strong>Oceane Cassignol<\/strong> touching two tenths ahead of American <strong>Mariah Denigan.<\/strong> A further two tenths back was <strong>Katie Grimes<\/strong> in fifth.<\/p>\n<p>The series title contenders were busy shadowboxing. \u00a0Beck hung with van Rouwendaal and edged her by a tenth for seventh place. That gave the German 2,140 points in the four-event season series, edging van Rouwendaal by 40 points.<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s <strong>Caroline Laure Jouisse<\/strong> finished 10th on Saturday and third overall in the series. Denigan was the highest American finisher in the series, in eighth.<\/p>\n<p>Bettina won the women\u2019s junior ranking with 1,500 points, ahead of Weinstein and Grimes.<\/p>\n<p>American Olympian <strong>Ashley Twichell<\/strong> finished 35th, and <strong>Leah DeGeorge<\/strong> was 60th.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s race, Acerenza pulled away from the field to secure a margin of 5.5 seconds over Australian <strong>Nicholas Sloman<\/strong> to get to the pad first. Acerenza\u2019s time was 1:45.06.20. Rasovszky came in safely in third to add another medal and secure his series title with 2,500 points. Second was Italy\u2019s <strong>Marcello Guidi<\/strong> with 2,000 points. Guidi finished 10th on Saturday.
