Purdue Invitational: Boilermaker Women, Northwestern Men Secure Victories<\/strong><\/p>\n

Purdue’s women grabbed three wins and while the Northwestern men had five victories on the final night of the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., and those two teams each secured the overall meet titles. Purdue scored 1093.5 points to win convincingly over Northwestern (747) and Illinois (469), while the Northwestern men wracked up 1047.5 points to beat out Purdue (886.5) and McKendree (603).<\/p>\n

Purdue’s\u00a0Caitlin Hurley<\/strong> pulled away for the win in the women’s 1650 freestyle, touching in 16:41.69, about two seconds ahead of teammate\u00a0Reagan Mattice<\/strong> (16:43.60). Illinois’\u00a0Paloma Canos Cervera<\/strong> placed third in 16:47.10. Later on, Purdue pulled off a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 butterfly.\u00a0Cecilie Wiuff<\/strong> grabbed the win in 1:59.10, and teammate\u00a0Madeline Greaves<\/strong> took second in 1:59.67 ahead of early leader\u00a0Brinly Hardy<\/strong> (1:59.79). Platform diving was also the domain of Purdue, with\u00a0Daryn Wright<\/strong> winning with a score of 313.20 ahead of teammates Maycey Vieta<\/strong> (305.00) and\u00a0Sophia McAfee<\/strong> (283.20).<\/p>\n

Northwestern’s\u00a0Ayla Spitz<\/strong> trailed Southern Illinois’\u00a0Celia Pulido<\/strong> by six tenths halfway through the 200 backstroke, but Spitz was the fastest swimmer by a second on each of the final two 50s. Spitz touched in 1:53.48, with Pulido touching almost two seconds back in 1:55.30 and Northwestern’s Justine Murdock<\/strong> placing third in 1:56.15. Lindsay Ervin<\/strong> made it back-to-back wins for the Northwestern women as she came in at 49.03 in the 100 free ahead of Missouri State’s Jordan Wenner<\/strong> (49.64) and Purdue’s Kendra Brown <\/strong>(49.98).<\/p>\n

Northwestern’s\u00a0Maggie Papanicholas<\/strong> was eight tenths behind Southern Illinois’\u00a0Olivia Herron<\/strong> entering the last two lengths before Papanicholas came home in a blistering 32.65 to take the lead and steal away the win in 2:12.09. Herron was second in 2:13.79, with Illinois State’s\u00a0Madyson Morse<\/strong> rounding out the top three (2:14.10).<\/p>\n

The Northwestern team of Spitz, Ervin,\u00a0Audrey Yu<\/strong> and\u00a0Sydney Smith<\/strong> captured first place in the 400 free relay in 3:17.45, followed by the Purdue team of Brown,\u00a0Maggie Love<\/strong>, Hurley and\u00a0Kendal Schreder<\/strong> (3:18.88). Third went to Missouri State’s\u00a0Lana Lanson<\/strong>,\u00a0Jordan Wenner<\/strong>,\u00a0Anna Lucas<\/strong> and\u00a0Sami Roemer<\/strong> (3:21.73).<\/p>\n
