{"id":572603,"date":"2023-11-13T14:06:13","date_gmt":"2023-11-13T21:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=572603"},"modified":"2023-11-13T14:06:13","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T21:06:13","slug":"new-zealand-teen-sensation-monique-wieruszowski-joins-exodus-to-auckland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/new-zealand-teen-sensation-monique-wieruszowski-joins-exodus-to-auckland\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand Teen Sensation Monique Wieruszowski Joins Exodus to Auckland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>New Zealand Teen Sensation Monique Wieruszowski Joins Exodus to Auckland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New Zealand breaststroke star <strong>Monique Wieruszowski<\/strong> has become the latest Kiwi medal hope to change training bases this month, moving from Taranaki to Auckland.<\/p>\n<p>Wieruszowski\u2019s decision comes on the heels of Olympian <strong>Lewis Clareburt<\/strong> moving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/struggling-for-pool-time-lewis-clareburt-shifts-training-base-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from Wellington to Auckland after a dispute over training time and facility availability<\/a> at a community-owned pool.<\/p>\n<p>Taranaki, on the western edge of New Zealand\u2019s North Island, lacks a 50-meter indoor pool for Wieruszowski to train in, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newshub.co.nz\/home\/sport\/2023\/11\/swimming-rising-teen-star-monique-wieruszowski-joins-growing-exodus-to-auckland-due-to-poor-facilities.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told media in the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s quite frustrating,\u201d she said. \u201cIt&#8217;s quite hard to get to training and train easily. There&#8217;s not that many pools and it&#8217;s quite hard to find lanes and everything. &#8220;(It&#8217;s) only (25m pools) and then a 50m outdoor pool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wieruszowski, 16, is one to watch for the future. In the spring, she set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/monique-wieruszowski-15-adds-second-national-record-as-new-zealand-finalizes-worlds-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all three national records in breaststroke<\/a> at age 15. She went on to a silver medal in the women\u2019s 50 breaststroke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-junior-championships-lana-pudar-maximus-williamson-set-meet-records-in-victories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the World Junior Championships in the fall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand did away with its centralizing training location in 2018 for elite swimmers, which has left them to seek their own fits. <strong>Erika Fairweather,<\/strong> for instance, is based in Dunedin on the South Island. The answer, said Swimming NZ Olympic Program Lead <strong>Gary Francis,<\/strong> is increased investment, though not necessarily centralization.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We would love better facilities,&#8221; Francis said. \u201cI think when we look at Australia, if we look at almost any other country that&#8217;s doing well at swimming, they&#8217;ve got superior facilities to us. That\u2019s a big picture issue. What I will say though, is we get great support from our facility providers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Francis said the governing body is focusing on doing what\u2019s best for the swimmers to accommodate their training needs.
