{"id":572343,"date":"2023-11-09T04:04:21","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T11:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=572343"},"modified":"2023-11-09T04:04:21","modified_gmt":"2023-11-09T11:04:21","slug":"two-time-world-champion-matt-richards-nominated-for-uk-sport-award-after-historic-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/two-time-world-champion-matt-richards-nominated-for-uk-sport-award-after-historic-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Two-Time World Champion Matt Richards Nominated For UK Sport Award After Historic Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Two-Time World Champion Matt Richards Nominated For UK Sport Award After Historic Year<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Matt Richards<\/strong> has been nominated for honours at <strong>UK Sport\u2019s PLx Awards<\/strong> 2023 following a year in which he won double gold at the <strong>World Championships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year-old &#8211; coached by <strong>Ryan Livingstone<\/strong> at Millfield, south-west England &#8211; hinted at what was to come at the<strong> British Championships<\/strong> in April where he became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matt-richards-becomes-first-athlete-to-hit-historic-21-47-144-freestyle-triple\/\">the first man to hit the 21\/47.1:44 freestyle triple<\/a>, going 21.98 in the 50, 47.72 in the 100 and 1:44.83 over 200.<\/p>\n<p>Come the 200 free at the Fukuoka worlds and he led home Olympic champion <strong>Tom Dean<\/strong> for a historic British one-two before the pair joined forces with <strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong> and <strong>James Guy<\/strong> to add the 4&#215;200 world crown to their Olympic title.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_527106\" style=\"width: 324px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-527106\" data-attachment-id=\"527106\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/live-british-championships-day-6-finals-dean-scott-guy-richards-among-top-quality-200-free-final\/image004-1\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image004-1.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1047,637\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"image004 (1)\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;image004 (1)&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Matt Richards: Photo Courtesy: Morgan Harlow\/British Swimming&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image004-1-700x500.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image004-1-1024x623.jpg\" class=\" wp-image-527106\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/image004-1-700x500.jpg\" alt=\"Matt Richards\" width=\"314\" height=\"224\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-527106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Richards: Photo Courtesy: Morgan Harlow\/British Swimming<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He also led off the British 4&#215;100 mixed free quartet in 47.83 as they claimed bronze in a European record of 3:21.68.<\/p>\n<p>Richards has the opportunity to add to his silverware at next month&#8217;s <strong>European Short-Course Swimming Championships<\/strong> in Otopeni, Romania.<\/p>\n<p>There he&#8217;ll compete in the 50, 100 and 200 free where the likes of <strong>David Popovici, Maxime Grousset<\/strong> and <strong>Florent Manaudou<\/strong> await along with British teammates Dean, Scott, Guy and <strong>Ben Proud.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His achievements have been recognised with his nomination for the Athlete Award alongside <strong>Joe Clarke<\/strong> &#8211; who won two titles at the <strong>2023 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships<\/strong> &#8211; and <strong>Matt Weston<\/strong>, who claimed the world skeleton crown while enjoying a golden World Cup campaign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PLx Awards is run by UK Sport and supported by The National Lottery with individuals, teams and outstanding projects in the Olympic and Paralympic high-performance community which will be celebrated at the awards ceremony in Stratford-upon-Avon on 28 November.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back at his 2023 so far, Richards told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It was a great year. The past season for me and the team was about building back to where we wanted to be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The previous year was quite a tough one for me; it wasn\u2019t where I wanted to be after the success of Tokyo and so all of last season for us was about getting myself back on the trajectory that I wanted to be on heading into
