{"id":571754,"date":"2023-10-28T21:03:05","date_gmt":"2023-10-29T04:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=571754"},"modified":"2023-10-28T21:03:05","modified_gmt":"2023-10-29T04:03:05","slug":"olympic-medalist-ryan-cochrane-to-be-inducted-to-bc-sports-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-medalist-ryan-cochrane-to-be-inducted-to-bc-sports-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic Medalist Ryan Cochrane To Be Inducted to BC Sports Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Olympic Medalist Ryan Cochrane To Be Inducted to BC Sports Hall of Fame<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two-time Olympic Medalist <strong>Ryan Cochrane<\/strong> will be inducted to the BC Sports Hall of Fame, it was announced this week.<\/p>\n<p>Cochrane is one of five athletes to go into the Hall of Champions <a href=\"https:\/\/bcsportshall.com\/announcement-day-bc-sports-hall-of-fame-reveals-class-of-2024-selections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the 2024 induction ceremony next May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cochrane won a silver medal in the men\u2019s 1,500 freestyle at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the first Canadian male swimmer to medal at the Olympics in 22 years. He added silver in the 2012 London Games, with the sizeable caveat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-verdict-ryan-cochrane-and-chad-le-clos-on-the-lasting-pain-of-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of it coming behind the now-suspended<\/a> <strong>Sun Yang.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cochrane, a native and resident of Victoria, competed first in the 400 free at the 2008 Olympics when he was just 19. He briefly held the Olympic record in heats and held on for the bronze in the final, behind <strong>Ous Mellouli<\/strong> of Tunisia and Australia\u2019s <strong>Grant Hackett.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cochrane frequented the global soccer scene. He won silver in the 1,500 free and bronze in the 800 free at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. He added silver in both events in 2011 in Shanghai, then silver in the 1,500 and bronze in the 800 in Barcelona in 2013. At Worlds in 2015, he secured bronze in both the 400 and the 1,500 free. His eight World Championships medals took him past <strong>Brent Hayden<\/strong> as Canada\u2019s most decorated swimmer at Worlds.<\/p>\n<p>Cochrane won gold in the 800 and 1,500 and silver in the 400 at the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships. He added gold in the 800 in the 2014 meet. He added four golds across two Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2014, plus two golds and relay bronze in the 2015 Pan Am Games in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Cochrane was a captain of the Canadian team at the 2016 Olympics. He finished sixth in the 1,500 free and missed the final of the 400. Cochrane was an eight-time Canadian Swimmer of the Year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-cochrane-named-swimming-canada-male-swimmer-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from 2008-15<\/a>. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/canadian-olympian-ryan-cochrane-announces-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retired from swimming in 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelownanow.com\/watercooler\/sports\/news\/Sports\/BC_Sports_Hall_of_Fame_announces_2024_inductees_1\/#fs_130715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joining Cochrane<\/a> is MLB player <strong>Justin Morneau,<\/strong> the late female baseball player <strong>Amanda Asay,<\/strong> freestyle skier <strong>Cassie Sharpe,<\/strong> golfer <strong>Richard Zokol,<\/strong> builder\/coaches <strong>Beverley Felske, Dr. Bob McCormack<\/strong> and <strong>Wayne Norton,<\/strong> media personality <strong>Don Taylor,<\/strong> the 1988 Langley Little League All-Stars and
