{"id":571273,"date":"2023-10-22T12:05:10","date_gmt":"2023-10-22T19:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=571273"},"modified":"2023-10-22T12:05:10","modified_gmt":"2023-10-22T19:05:10","slug":"kenyan-swimming-federations-ban-lifted-by-world-aquatics-after-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kenyan-swimming-federations-ban-lifted-by-world-aquatics-after-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenyan Swimming Federation\u2019s Ban Lifted By World Aquatics after Elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kenyan Swimming Federation\u2019s Ban Lifted By World Aquatics after Elections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kenyan Swimming Federation successfully held elections last week, which has led to its reinstatement by World Aquatics.<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of Sports Cabinet Secretary <strong>Ababu Namwamba,<\/strong> Kenya broke a domestic impasse that led to more than a decade without elections being held within the swimming federation.<\/p>\n<p>Elections finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulsesports.co.ke\/other-sports\/story\/finally-kenya-swimming-federation-ban-lifted-by-world-aquatics-2023101805520484741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took place on Oct. 14<\/a>. <strong>Maureen Owiti<\/strong> was elected president, with <strong>Stanley Kaberu<\/strong> and <strong>Hilari Seri<\/strong> as first and second vice president, respectively. <strong>Collins Margiri<\/strong> is the KSF\u2019s new secretary general, and the KSF also filled out various committee positions.<\/p>\n<p>Namwamba posted about the achievement on X (formerly Twitter), thanking World Aquatics and pledging continued assistance to the KSF via Kenya\u2019s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Namwamba <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulsesports.co.ke\/other-sports\/story\/cooling-the-storm-namwamba-strikes-deal-to-unlock-impasse-at-kenya-aquatics-2023082316504407752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has thread what appears to be a narrow lane<\/a> between government influence in sport, which can be a reason to suspend sports governing bodies within the Olympic movement, and using the Kenyan government\u2019s power to move to the swimming community to long delayed action.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Great day for Kenyan swimming as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldAquatics?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WorldAquatics<\/a> lifts the long-standing suspension of Kenya Aquatics imposed in 2019. I thank the World Aquatics Executive Committee for working\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5VxTvF24sa\">pic.twitter.com\/5VxTvF24sa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Hon Ababu-Namwamba, EGH\ud83c\uddf0\ud83c\uddea (@AbabuNamwamba) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbabuNamwamba\/status\/1714354841839944004?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>World Aquatics confirmed that the suspension has been lifted in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"EN-US\">World Aquatics is pleased to report that by the decision of the World Aquatics Bureau, the suspension of Kenya Aquatics is lifted,&#8221; World Aquatics said in a statement. &#8220;<\/span>The World Aquatics Bureau thanks the tireless work of the Stabilization Committee, which successfully prepared an updated constitution and held democratic elections for the future officers of the national federation. With this, World Aquatics is pleased to welcome Dr. Maureen Owiti as the President of the federation, along with Mr. Collins Marigiri as Secretary General. We look forward to seeing Kenyan athletes compete at the upcoming World Aquatics Championships -Doha 2024 and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Kenyan Swimming Federation was suspended provisionally in Dec. 2019, and the ban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kenya-swimming-federation-election-delays-could-lead-to-fina-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was extended in 2021<\/a>. Kenyan athletes competed at the World Aquatics Championships last year under the banner of \u201cSuspended Member Federations,\u201d but its participation in the Paris Olympics was in doubt if progress wasn&#8217;t made.
