{"id":571118,"date":"2023-10-20T19:04:47","date_gmt":"2023-10-21T02:04:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=571118"},"modified":"2023-10-20T19:04:47","modified_gmt":"2023-10-21T02:04:47","slug":"minnesota-women-lead-while-smu-men-in-front-on-day-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/minnesota-women-lead-while-smu-men-in-front-on-day-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota Women Lead, While SMU Men in Front on Day 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">The Golden Gopher swimming and diving teams started off their two-day dual with SMU strong Friday night at the Robson and Lindley Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The women, ranked No. 24 in the CSCAA Poll, lead the Mustangs 137-49 after their first 10 events, while the men trail by just five points, 95-90. Of the 20 total swimming events of the evening, the Gophers claimed the top spot in 14 of them, including top two finishes in eight.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The women\u2019s team saw six different individual winners for the evening in the pool.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Senior <strong>Megan Van Berkom<\/strong> touched the wall first in the 400 IM (4:13.06), followed by freshman <strong>Katie McCarthy<\/strong> in second (4:22.61). The duo also finished one-two in the 500 free, with McCarthy taking the top spot with a time of 4:51.38, followed by Van Berkom at 4:51.54.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Gophers also saw individual victories from sophomores<strong> Ava Yablonski<\/strong> in the 100 fly (54.90) and <strong>Grace Drabot i<\/strong>n the 100 breast (1:04.11), as well as junior <strong>Hannah Cornish<\/strong> in the 50 free (23.14) and senior <strong>Paula Rodriguez Rivero<\/strong> in the 100 back (55.11).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Minnesota women also got wins from both relay teams. Rodriguez Rivero<strong>, Ava Goodno,<\/strong> Yablonski and Cornish made up the 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:42.22. Cornish and Yablonski joined<strong> Mina Kaljevic<\/strong> and <strong>Morgan Thomas<\/strong> on the first-place 400 freestyle relay team with a time of 3:24.60.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the diving well, freshman <strong>Elna Widerstrom<\/strong> claimed her first career victory with a score of 303.83 in the 1-meter. <strong>Adeline Albrecht<\/strong> and <strong>Av Osero<\/strong> both contributed points for Minnesota behind scores of 284.33 and 257.33, respectively.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Three Minnesota men garnered individual wins in the pool along with one relay victory.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Freshman <strong>Davide Harabagiu<\/strong> took first place in the 100 fly with a time of 46.11 with teammate <strong>Kaiser Neverman<\/strong> placing third with a time of 47.14. Neverman went on to clock the fastest time of the night in the 50 free, finishing in 20.12.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The men\u2019s final individual victory of the night came from senior <strong>Casey Stowe<\/strong> in the 100 back, touching the wall in 48.31.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Harabagiu and Neverman united with <strong>Lovro Serdarevic<\/strong> and<strong> Connor Groya<\/strong> to take the final race of the evening for Gophers in 2:55.76.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The men snagged the top two spots in the 3-meter dive, with sophomore<strong> Andrew Bennett<\/strong> placing first (363.08), followed by freshman<strong> YuTong Wang<\/strong> (349.13).<\/p>\n<p>SMU&#8217;s <strong>Jack Hoagland&#8217;<\/strong>s time of 3:46.93 in the 400 IM was once again under the B-Cut \u2014 with him also setting an SMU record in the 500 free with a time of 4:17.66.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sage Sungail<\/strong> also had an impressive day, finishing in the top two in three races.<\/p>\n<p>SMU opened the meet with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay, with <strong>John Easton,\u00a0<dfn>Angus Corbeau<\/dfn>,\u00a0<\/strong><dfn><strong>Russell Exu<\/strong>m<\/dfn>\u00a0combining to touch the wall in 1:27.21.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Minnesota and SMU conclude their two-day dual Saturday morning beginning at 11 a.m. The meet will be streamed on Pony TV with live results available on the MeetMobile App (subscription required).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More College News<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW216010068 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216010068 BCX0\">\u2014 The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Minnesota Athletics and SMU Athletics<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW216010068 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW216010068 BCX0\">.
