James, 33, appeared in court in Plymouth, England, on Monday<\/a>. A total of 18 charges were read against him, including five counts of rape and, \u201cmultiple counts of sexual activity with a child under the age of 16, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and inviting a third party to have sex with a child.\u201d He also faces two charges of assault causing bodily harm. His arrest in September<\/a> had cited 21 charges.<\/p>\n

The incidents are said to have occurred with three female victims. The allegations cover incidents that occurred between 2012 and 2022.<\/p>\n

James pleaded not guilty and was released on conditional bail. He will appear next in Plymouth Crown Court on Nov. 17. The trial is expected to take place next summer.<\/p>\n

James worked as a student police officer. He was suspended at the time of his arrest last month and is no longer in the employ of the Devon and Cornwall Police.<\/p>\n

James swam for Team GB in the 2012 Olympics as a sprint butterflier. He represented the country at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2011 World Championships. His career ran through the 2016 British Olympic Trials.
