{"id":570774,"date":"2023-10-13T19:36:35","date_gmt":"2023-10-14T02:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=570774"},"modified":"2023-10-14T13:33:34","modified_gmt":"2023-10-14T20:33:34","slug":"chris-guiliano-leads-notre-dame-to-win-over-purdue-boilermaker-women-beat-fighting-irish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chris-guiliano-leads-notre-dame-to-win-over-purdue-boilermaker-women-beat-fighting-irish\/","title":{"rendered":"Chris Guiliano Leads Notre Dame to Win Over Purdue; Boilermaker Women Beat Fighting Irish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chris Guiliano Leads Notre Dame to Win Over Purdue; Boilermaker Women Beat Fighting Irish<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an all-Indiana battle in South Bend, the Purdue women held home-pool advantage over Notre Dame by a 165-135 margin while <strong>Chris Guiliano<\/strong>, the sprinter who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-nationals-jack-alexy-chris-guiliano-stun-field-in-mens-100-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jumped onto the U.S. World Championship team in a surprise this summer<\/a>, provided the decisive advantage for his team as Notre Dame was the winner of the men&#8217;s meet, 177 to 123.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s meet began with\u00a0<strong>Tommy Janton<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tyler Christianson<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Casey Wilburn<\/strong> and Guiliano winning the 200 medley relay in 1:26.21, with Guiliano anchoring in 18.86. Guiliano later won the 50 freestyle in 19.64 before taking the 100 free in 42.86. Guiliano then led off the 400 free relay in 43.07 before teammates <strong>Tanner Filion<\/strong>, Janton and Wilburn helped the Fighting Irish to victory in 2:54.86.<\/p>\n<p>Janton won Notre Dame&#8217;s first individual victory of the day as he led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 free, touching in 1:38.25. Janton later was victorious in the 200 back in a strong time of 1:43.26. <strong>Marcus Gentry<\/strong>\u00a0 led a sweep of the top four spots in the 100 backstroke as he touched in 47.41. <strong>Tate Bacon<\/strong> dominated the 200 butterfly in 1:47.43, and Wilburn won the 100 fly in 47.74. The 200 IM went to ND&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dillon Edge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 1000 free, Purdue&#8217;s <strong>Aaron Frollo<\/strong> (9:32.92) and\u00a0<strong>Patrick Broderick<\/strong> (9:33.44) finished 1-2, and Frollo led another 1-2 result in the 500 free, winning in 4:35.63 over teammate\u00a0<strong>Ethan Shaw<\/strong> (4:35.83). <strong>Coleman Modglin<\/strong> won the 100 breaststroke in 55.50. Modglin later added a victory in the 200 breast as he edged Christianson by a tenth, 2:00.26 to 2:00.36. Diving wins went to Purdue&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jordan Rzepka<\/strong> on 1-meter (361.05) and 3-meter (406.73).<\/p>\n<p>For the women, <strong>Caitlin Hurley<\/strong> opened the day with a win for Purdue as she edged Notre Dame&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mary Cate Pruitt<\/strong> by less than one second in the 1000 free, 10:08.60 to 10:09.43. It was an even tighter finish in the 200 free as the Boilermakers&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Kate Beavon\u00a0<\/strong>beat Notre Dame&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Madelyn Christman <\/strong>by six hundredths, 1:51.10 to 1:51.16. <strong>Maggie <\/strong><strong>Love<\/strong> won the 100 breast in 1:02.35 before\u00a0<strong>Cecilie Wiuff<\/strong> claimed a four-hundredth victory over ND&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rhianna Hensler<\/strong> in the 200 butterfly, 2:03.90 to 2:03.94.<\/p>\n<p>Later on,\u00a0<strong>Kelsey Cooper<\/strong> took the 200 back (2:00.49), and\u00a0<strong>Kate Mouser<\/strong> won the 500 free (4:55.62).\u00a0<strong>Brinly Hardy<\/strong> got to the wall first in the 100 fly with a time of 55.72, with freshman teammate <strong>Keira Kask<\/strong> just behind (55.79). In the final women&#8217;s individual event, Love became the only double winner of the day as she dominated the field by nearly five seconds, touching in 2:01.38. In diving,\u00a0<strong>Daryn Wright\u00a0<\/strong>topped the standings on 1-meter (297.00) and 3-meter (347.70).<\/p>\n<p>Notre Dame won the 200 medley relay in 1:41.34 behind\u00a0<strong>Jess Geriane<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ellie Jew<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lente Geelen<\/strong> and Christman. Geelen topped Geraine by three hundredths in a 1-2 finish in the 100 back, 55.06 to 55.09.\u00a0<strong>Grace Brenneman<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fightingirish.com\/sports\/swim\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Irish<\/a> touched first in the 50 free (23.55), and Christman won the 100 free (51.19). Jew was victorious in the 200 breast (2:17.83).
