{"id":569913,"date":"2023-09-24T11:26:31","date_gmt":"2023-09-24T18:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=569913"},"modified":"2023-09-24T11:39:44","modified_gmt":"2023-09-24T18:39:44","slug":"alabama-hired-richard-salhus-as-assistant-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/alabama-hired-richard-salhus-as-assistant-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Alabama Hires Richard Salhus as Assistant Coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Alabama Hired Richard Salhus as Assistant Coach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alabama on Friday announced the hiring of <strong>Richard Salhus<\/strong> as an assistant coach on <strong>Margo Geer\u2019s<\/strong> staff.<\/p>\n<p>Salhus spent the 2022-23 season <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lsu-names-richard-salhus-assistant-swimming-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as an assistant coach for LSU<\/a>, helping the Tigers\u2019 women\u2019s team to its highest NCAA finish in 30 years. Both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams notched top-20 results at NCAAs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/sec-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEC Swimming<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;I want to express my gratitude to head coach Margo Geer for the incredible opportunity to be a part of the Crimson Tide family,&#8221; Salhus said <a href=\"https:\/\/rolltide.com\/news\/2023\/9\/22\/swimming-diving-alabama-adds-richard-salhus-to-coaching-staff.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a university statement<\/a>. &#8220;It is an honor to join such a remarkable team while representing a university that provides all the necessary resources to pursue championships. I am excited to share the pool deck with an outstanding staff and build great relationships with our student-athletes to help and support them in seeking excellence. Roll Tide!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Salhus was an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 2019-22. Under his watch, the Black Knights earned 17 Patriot League championships.<\/p>\n<p>A graduate of the University of Iowa, he began his college coaching career there from 2016-19. He served as the Hawkeyes\u2019 assistant coach and the international recruiting coordinator for its men\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>Before that, Salhus started coaching with Iowa Flyers Swim Club in 2012, rising to become its head coach in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am excited for Rich, his wife Mary and his two sons, Liam and Oliver, to be a part of the Crimson Tide,&#8221; Geer said. &#8220;Rich brings tremendous insight from his years of experience coaching at the collegiate and club levels, and great enthusiasm for developing student-athletes in all facets of life.
