{"id":569692,"date":"2023-09-18T00:00:05","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T07:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=569692"},"modified":"2023-09-18T05:02:08","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T12:02:08","slug":"dean-boxall-earns-a-record-fourth-australian-coach-of-the-year-award-on-the-gold-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/dean-boxall-earns-a-record-fourth-australian-coach-of-the-year-award-on-the-gold-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Dean Boxall Earns Fourth Aussie Coach Of Year Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dean Boxall Earns A Record Fourth Australian Coach Of The Year Award On The Gold Coast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympic and World Championship gold medal coach\u00a0<strong>Dean Boxall<\/strong> has been crowned Australia&#8217;s top swimming coach for a record fourth time on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The man who steered Australia\u2019s golden girls to a record medal haul at this year\u2019s World Championships in Fukuoka won the award at the Swimming Coaches And Teachers Australia Awards Night, Sunday at The Star Casino.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boxall, head coach at the famed St Peters Western program in Brisbane, coached his star pupils\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-one-finals-ariarne-titmus-turns-race-of-the-century-into-world-record-romp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/after-100-200-freestyle-double-mollie-ocallaghan-secures-status-among-worlds-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to three individual gold medals \u2013 two of them in world record time as Australia scooped the pool against the Americans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titmus, who just last week revealed she had to undergo emergency surgery to remove benign tumors from one of her ovaries, won the much-vaunted women\u2019s 400m freestyle \u201cRace Of The Century\u201d in world record time \u2013 saying she was thankful to know she wuld make a full recovery and would start swimming again under Boxall in two to three weeks as they prepared for Paris 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While O\u2019Callaghan also set a new world record to beat Titmus over 200m freestyle, to defend her 100m freestyle crown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titmus and O\u2019Callaghan then joined Brisbane\u2019s St Peters Western clubmates\u00a0<strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Brianna Throssell<\/strong>\u00a0to win the 4x200m freestyle relay \u2013 also in world record time as the Dolphins swept to 13 gold medals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"4omNn48ELc\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-how-the-dean-boxall-of-st-peters-unlocked-australias-treasure-trove-of-gold-in-fukuoka\/\">World Championships: How The Dean Of St Peters Unlocked Australia\u2019s Treasure Trove Of Gold In Fukuoka<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; about the keys and (unlocking the powers) of each athlete- and each of his athletes is very, very different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe is exceptionally detailed and to see him in action he\u2019s fun to watch &#8211; he\u2019s very disciplined and he\u2019s very calm, believe it or not he\u2019s much more calm than people think and it\u2019s a privilege to be in that same space as him (on pool deck) and be able to lead the team with Dean on it and I feel a lot more calm when he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other major winners presented with their awards at The Star Casino ballroom were Boxall\u2019s fellow Queensland-based coaches,\u00a0<strong>Kate Sparkes <\/strong>(Yeronga Park, QLD) who was named the Open Water Coach of the Year and the Multi Class Coach of the Year while \u00a0(St Peters Western) was named Age Group Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sparkes steered Rio Olympian\u00a0<strong>Chelsea Gubecka\u00a0<\/strong>onto her second Olympic team for <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/olympic-games\/paris-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paris<\/a> after winning her silver medal in the 10k at the Fukuoka World Championships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gubecka was in the room last night and joined her coach on stage for the presentation with Awards Night host, 1988 Seoul Olympic gold medallist Duncan Armstrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as coaching Paralympic gold medallists\u00a0<strong>Rowan Crothers<\/strong>\u00a0to two gold and\u00a0<strong>Katja Dedekind<\/strong>\u00a0to one gold at the Para World Championships in Manchester.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleight led Boxall\u2019s St Peters Western team to another coveted and much sought after National Age Pointscore and he has just returned from the World Junior Championship in Israel where he coached\u00a0<strong>Jamie Perkins<\/strong>\u00a0to gold in the women\u2019s 400 freestyle and<strong>\u00a0Jacyln Barclay\u00a0<\/strong>to gold in the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleight has also been appointed as the new Head Coach of the Churchie swimming program in Brisbane, saying in a SwimCon23 lecture earlier in the day that he has worked and stood alongside Boxall describing him as \u201cthe best swim coach in the world\u201d also saying that \u201cI have to be Richard Sleight\u201d after being approached to take his new role.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, St Peters has appointed former Warringah Aquatic (NSW) head coach\u00a0<strong>Cameron Gledhill\u00a0<\/strong>to replace Sleight as its new National Age coach, coming into the Queensland system after steering the Warringah Aquatic Piranhas on Sydney\u2019s Northern Beaches to one of the best junior and youth programs in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And after a record number of nominations In the SWIM Australia Teacher Of The Year award categories, Canberra\u2019s \u00a0of Aquatots ACT has been named the 2023 Teacher of the Year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2023 SWIM Australia Teacher of the Year for Learners with Disability went to\u00a0<strong>Kelli-Jane Smith, f<\/strong>rom Little Snappers Swim\u00a0School, Queensland.\u00a0While the 2023 SWIM Australia Teacher of the Year for
