{"id":569665,"date":"2023-09-17T03:11:58","date_gmt":"2023-09-17T10:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=569665"},"modified":"2023-09-17T03:11:58","modified_gmt":"2023-09-17T10:11:58","slug":"matt-richards-named-british-swimming-athlete-of-the-year-following-double-gold-in-fukuoka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matt-richards-named-british-swimming-athlete-of-the-year-following-double-gold-in-fukuoka\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt Richards Named British Swimming Athlete Of The Year Following Double Gold In Fukuoka"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Matt Richards Named British Swimming Athlete Of The Year Following Double Gold In Fukuoka<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Matt Richards<\/strong> has been named <strong>British Swimming Athlete of the Year<\/strong> with <strong>Ryan Livingstone<\/strong> winning the coaches&#8217; award after guiding the Millfield swimmer to the 200 free title at the <strong>World Championships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-3-finals-matt-richards-leads-home-tom-dean-in-historic-british-1-2-in-200-free\/\">led home Olympic champion <strong>Tom Dean<\/strong> for a British 1-2 in Fukuoka, Japan<\/a>, in July before the pair joined forces with <strong>James Guy<\/strong> and <strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong> to claim the 4&#215;200 free title, two years after gold at the Tokyo Games.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">He just keeps going\ud83d\udcc8\ud83d\udc4f<\/p>\n<p>After a stunning season in the pool, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/M4ttRichards?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@M4ttRichards<\/a> is our 2023 Swimming Athlete of the Year\ud83c\udf1f\ud83c\udfc6 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BSTA2023?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BSTA2023<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/406WhoFlMP\">pic.twitter.com\/406WhoFlMP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aquatics GB (@Aquatics_GB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Aquatics_GB\/status\/1703146762490335618?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 16, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>With victory in a Welsh record of 1:44.30, Richards became the second Briton to win the event eight years after Guy claimed gold at <strong>Kazan 2015<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Welsh swimmer moved to Millfield after spending time at <strong>Bath National Centre<\/strong> with <strong>Jol Finck<\/strong> and latterly <strong>Dave McNulty<\/strong> after the former returned to Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Despite training alongside the likes of Guy and Dean, Richards&#8217; performances fell short of of previous years and he made the big switch between the <strong>2022 World Championships<\/strong> and <strong>Commonwealth Games<\/strong> weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>He served notice in April when he became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matt-richards-becomes-first-athlete-to-hit-historic-21-47-144-freestyle-triple\/\">the first man to hit a freestyle treble<\/a>\u00a0of 21\/47\/1:44 at the British trials in Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p>Then on to Fukuoka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-matt-richards-from-cafe-encounters-to-world-champion\/\">where he paid tribute to Livingstone<\/a>, words he echoed after the awards night, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m over the moon. It\u2019s been a great year \u2013 this wasn\u2019t the goal at the start of the season, but obviously I\u2019m super happy to walk away with this. It\u2019s a testament to my team, Ryan [Livingstone] and the rest of guys at Millfield and the hard work we\u2019ve all put in. Hopefully we can just continue to improve and build now and have an even better one next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was my first individual gold on a senior level, so obviously that was massive. There were lots of things that didn\u2019t quite go right \u2013 the 100m wasn\u2019t necessarily where I wanted it to be, but getting the British record was still a big win.
