Sydney Sprints (SC): Cody Simpson\u2019s Attack Mentality Earns Him A Second National Title in the 100m Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n

An attack mentality from Cody Simpson<\/strong> has seen the 24-year-old Gold Coat-based Olympic hopeful tear up the pool for his second National title in two nights on day three at the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney.<\/p>\n

Simpson (Griffith University, QLD) led from start to finish to win the 100m butterfly in 50.60 (10.88, 23.52, 36.76) to add to his 100m freestyle win from last night.<\/p>\n

The high profile pop star has been one of the star attractions at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre this week and he kept two-time Olympian David Morgan<\/strong> (Surfers Paradise, QLD) 50.76 and Alex Quach<\/strong> (SOPAC, NSW) 50.97 at bay in a blanket finish.<\/p>\n

And he has let his swimming do the singing off a song sheet he hopes will earn him a place one the 2024 Olympic team to Paris.<\/p>\n

Simpson then spoke of his determination to get the absolute best out of his \u00a0training and attacking his races.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve adopted an attack mentality, aiming to leave nothing in the tank and to just see what happens,\u201d Simpson told Olympian Sarah Ryan<\/strong> on 9Now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a student of the sport every single day, with my coach (Michael Bohl<\/strong>) and my team helping me improve in whatever area I can and there\u2019s tonnes more I can learn and improve on.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m here to put everything I do in training into my racing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simpson will now turn his attention to the 2023 World Cup Series which will be held entirely in Europe next month.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, University of Queensland\u2019s\u00a0S14 Para swimmer Jack Ireland<\/strong> set his second world record of meet \u2013 clocking 51.11 in the MC 100m freestyle with\u00a0Callum Simpson<\/strong>\u00a0(Flinders Phoenix, QLD) second in 58.41 and\u00a0Declan Budd<\/strong>\u00a0(Knox Pymble, NSW) third in 53.74.<\/p>\n

Ireland had opened proceedings on night one with a new world mark in the 200m freestyle.<\/p>\n

The women\u2019s 100m butterfly saw Canberra-based Abbey Webb<\/strong> (Cruiz, ACT) add title number three after her victories in the 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke \u2013 winning tonight\u2019s final in 58.57 ahead of Isabella Osborn<\/strong> (MLC Aquatic, VIC) 59.62 and Rafaela Kopellou<\/strong> (SOPAC, NSW) 59.64.<\/p>\n

And in one of the best races of the night saw Olympic teammates Tamsin Cook<\/strong> (Melbourne Vicentre, VIC) 4:04.44 and Madeleine Gough <\/strong>(Carlile, NSW) fight it out in the 400m freestyle \u2013 Cook overtaking Gough with 50m to go to take the title by just 0.31 after 16 laps. Adriana Fydler<\/strong> (Miami, QLD) added bronze to her 200m backstroke silver from night two in 4:09.08.<\/p>\n

While in the men\u2019s 400m freestyle, it was Thomas Hauck<\/strong> (All Saints, QLD) adding title number three to the 100m and 200m backstroke wins.<\/p>\n

After the first 100m, Hauck was never headed to take the title in 3:43.36 from European champion Luc Kroon<\/strong>(Netherlands) 3:46.73 and Koby Bujak-Upton<\/strong> (Knox Pymble, NSW) 3:48.77 hanging on for third.<\/p>\n

It was an encouraging night for the son and daughters of four Olympians.<\/p>\n

Fydler, the daughter of Olympic parents Chris Fydler<\/strong> (1992, 1996, 2000) and Rosie Brown <\/strong>(1980), Bujak-Upton the son of Simon Upton<\/strong> (1988) and \u00a0Chloe Douglas-Byrne,<\/strong> the 16-year-old daughter of Dimity Douglas<\/strong> (1984) finishing second in the Age final in the 100m butterfly after her fifth placing in the 100m freestyle final last night.<\/p>\n
