Were they standouts from a young age? A late bloomer? Did they follow a gradual arc of progression?<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Swimmers such as Ryan Held and Michael Andrew are now household names in the swim community. But were these USA National Teamers always elite swimmers, or did they see massive improvements just in the last couple of years to get to this point?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are tables comparing the progression of the top five 50-meter freestylers in the United States in 2023 through their careers in high school and college and in the professional circuit. Held was the fastest 50 freestyler this season in the United States.\u00a0 While he was not the fastest swimmer in the country when he started high school, he was a premier swimmer by the time he graduated. As a member of the N.C. State Wolfpack, he improved dramatically and made the 2016 Olympic Team, winning a gold medal as a member of the 4&#215;100 free relay. This progression table adds the 100-yard and 100-meter free to show truly how linear Guiliano\u2019s progression has been. Even many swim nerds did not know who Guiliano was before the 2023 ACC Championships where he won the 200 free.
