There is definitely foul play,&#8221; <strong>Jessica DeVries<\/strong>, Cail&#8217;s cousin and a spokesperson for the family, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/swimmer-jamie-cail-death-ruled-fentanyl-overdose-accident-family-disagrees-2023-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Insider<\/a>. \u201cWe have decided to release the photo because we need everybody to understand that Jamie was not a fentanyl user \u2014 that she had actually been beaten. Jamie\u2019s face was smashed in, the top of her skull and her nose. Her face is bashed in. Did fentanyl do that to her?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The autopsy report was released on Aug. 22 and stated the cause of death to be &#8220;fentanyl intoxication with aspiration of gastric content&#8221; and was ruled an accident, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>According to Insider, police said Cail&#8217;s boyfriend, who was not identified, found Cail on the floor of their home after he left a local bar to check on her just after midnight on February 21. He then transported Cail to the Myrah Keating-Smith Clinic where CPR was performed on Cail, but she could not be saved, the police department has said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want transparency and we want justice,&#8221; DeVries told Insider.<\/p>\n<p>Cail swam for Bolles School in Florida before moving to California where she became a state champion before competing collegiately at USC and then Maine.<\/p>\n<p>She was on the U.S. National Team, earning a gold medal on the 800 free relay at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former U.S. National Team member Jamie Cail died earlier this year in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a death that has now been ruled an accidental overdose.
