BARCELONA, July 28. THE USA topped all other nations both in gold medals and total medals won at the just-concluded World Championships.<\/p>\n
Adding the medals from all five aqautic disciplines – pool swimming, open water swimming, water polo, diving and synchronized swimming – the US amassed 12 gold medals to top Russia's 10, and 30 total medals – four more than Australia.<\/p>\n
Swimmers from 27 nations of the 157 represented here
\nwon medals.<\/p>\n
Two years ago, in Fukuoka, it was unclear whether Australia or the US was king of the water. While Australia had the most gold medals, the US came out on top in the official FINA scoring, which awarded points through eighth place. <\/p>\n
This time there is no doubt.<\/p>\n

Counting just the pool swimming, the USA also topped the list, 12-7 over Australia in golds and 28-22 over the Aussies in total medals. <\/p>\n
Take Michael Phelps out of the picture, however, and the US is just barely ahead of Australia. One glaring weak spot for the US is the freestyle events, where the Americans failed to capture a single gold.<\/p>\n
Swimmers from 13 countries won gold at the Palau Sant Jordi pool at this meet, while 23 nations shared the medals. <\/p>\n
