AUSTIN, TX – University of Texas head women’s swim coach Jill Sterkel is among 13 individuals selected for induction into the 1998 class of the National High School Sports Hall of Fame. Induction ceremonies will be held Wednesday, July 1, 1998 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Denver, CO. <\/p>\n
The 1998 class is the 16th group to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Of the 13 inductees July 1, three are student-athletes, five are coaches and five are athletic administrators\/officials. Sterkel’s induction is an elite honor, as only 85 student-athletes have been inducted previously into the Hall. The National Federation of State High School Associations created the Hall of Fame in 1982 to honor those for their extraordinary achievements and accomplishments in high school athletics. Sterkel, a native of Hacienda Heights, CA, won eight California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section individual swim titles at Wilson High School and was a member of the 1976 4×100-meter Olympic gold medal relay team in Montreal at the age of 15. She set eight national high school records and still holds the second-best time in the 50-yard freestyle. Sterkel, the 1997-98 Big 12 Conference Women’s Swim Coach of the Year, is entering her seventh year as UT head coach. She has led the Longhorns to four conference championships (Southwest Conference) and two runner-up finishes, while recording Top 10 finishes at the NCAA National Championships in each of her six years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
