COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, June 10. USA Swimming is sending just six swimmers to this summer’s Youth Olympic Games in China, one of the smallest squads that will attend the event that produced a few international stars in its first outing in 2010.<\/p>\n
Patrick Conaton, Patrick Mulcare and Justin Wright will fill the men’s roster. Hannah Moore, Courtney Mykkanen and Clara Smiddy will represent the Stars and Stripes on the women’s team. Irvine Novaquatics associate head coach Jeri Mashburn will lead the USA team, while Bob Staab of the Phillips 66 Splash Club will serve as team manager.<\/p>\n
In making the team announcement today, USA Swimming mentioned that one male and one female could be added to the list in the near future, if the athlete participation cap has not been met as the entry deadline approaches.<\/p>\n
Among the men, Justin Wright is the most notable name. He won the 200 fly at last year’s Arena Grand Prix stop in Santa Clara and was third in the 200 fly at last summer’s junior nationals. Conaton was a championship finalist in the backstroke events at junior nationals, while Mulcare made the top eight at the meet in the 400 IM.<\/p>\n
Smiddy has some international hardware already on her list of accolades. She won bronze in the 50 backstroke at last year’s junior world championships, and was a finalist in the 200 back at the USA Swimmin nationals.<\/p>\n
Moore is the short course junior national champion in the 500 free and Mykkanen, the daughter of 1984 Olympic silver medalist John Mykkanen, was a finalist in the backstroke events at the junior nationals and U.S. Open.<\/p>\n
